Senator Aquilino Pimentel, Jr. today called on the Senate and House of Representatives not to succumb to Malacañang’s pressure to water down the bill delineating the archipelagic baselines of the Philippines.

Spratly Deals Cover 6 Philippine Islands

A deal by the Philippines government with China on the exploitation of oil resources in the Spratly Islands is not only unconstitutional but will likely have the country on the economic losing end.

Did the Philippines surrender to China its claim over the Spratlys islands? Such a surrender, the suspicion goes, is seen as the reason why Beijing is showering Manila with billions of loans, several of which are hounded by allegations of corruption.
Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has asked the Senate to look into an alleged deal entered into by President Arroyo and Beijing on the alleged “sellout” of the Philippines’s interests in the Spratlys dispute in exchange for “overpriced loans for anomalous projects” such as the NBN deal and the North and South Rail projects.
