
GENDER ISSUES A photo essay by Len Olea and Ayi Muallam | “The condition of the Filipino women has gotten from bad to worse eight years after President Arroyo took over in Malacañang. President Arroyo’s government has spawned widespread misery, poverty, unbridled corruption, and violence against Filipino women, with her contemptuous servility to foreign interests and flagrant perpetuation of herself in power.”

The nongovernment group Kabiba Alliance, a children’s right advocate based in Davao City, circulated photographs (such as the one at left) of children maimed and killed allegedly during military air strikes in Maguindanao. According to reports, the air strikes — supposedly aimed at Moro rebels — killed civilians, five of them children. The photos, which show graphic and grisly images of the children, can be viewed here.
Journalists from Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon observed World Press Freedom Day today, May 3, at the shrine of Marcelo del Pilar, the national hero and revolutionary propagandist, in Bulacan.
