NATIONAL UNION OF JOURNALISTS OF THE PHILIPPINES – CEBU
NUJP Cebu Chapter strongly condemn and abhor the recent abduction and killing of a group of politicians, supporters and journalists in Maguindanao.
We do not condone the killing of men and women, and ultimately, we condemn the massacre of local journalists who were accompanying a local politician who was on her way to file the COC of her husband for governorship in the province of Maguindanao in the May 2010 polls.
This gruesome act, who ever may be behind this, should be put to an end.
We appeal to the Office of the President, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and all local authorities in Maguinadao to bring justice to the victims and jail the perpetrators immediately.
This act, be it politically or culturally motivated, should be the last in the long list of human rights violations in the country. If this is an act of terror aiming to send a message to media men and women to retreat, then this will never serve its purpose.
We consider the massacre of journalists as the darkest point of democracy and free press in this recent times.
NUJP Cebu will continue to strike at desperate areas in the name of ‘the right to information’.
NUJP Cebu will never stop unless justice is delivered to where it is due.
NUJP Cebu is one with the world in condemning all brutal, barbaric acts to obtain selfish interests.
Hence, NUJP Cebu will remain firm in its stand to continue its mandate in protecting journalists and delivering information to the public, so that democracy will prevail
May God bless us. May the light of freedom and democracy lead us out from this darkest moment.
Sincerely.
Rico P. Lucena
