Justice for Victims of Ampatuan Massacre
The Press Photographers of the Philippines (PPP) demands justice for our colleagues and all the other victims of the November 23 Ampatuan massacre in Maguindanao province, Mindanao.
We condemn in particular the killing of women, lawyers and journalists.
The abduction and slaughter of the wife, relatives and supporters of Ismail Mangudadatu, who were on their way to file his certificate of candidacy to run as governor of Maguindanao, including lawyers and 12 of our colleagues – is a heinous crime – perpetrated by about 100 men led by Mayor Datu Unsay Ampatuan and one Police Senior Inspector Dicay of the Shariff Aguak police force, according to the military.
To kill indiscriminately and wantonly shows the utter disregard for the law by apparently powerful and influential forces in Maguindanao and we call for the swift apprehension and punishment of the perpetrators and mastermind of this gruesome massacre.
We refuse to be “just positive indicators of bravery and dedication, willing to make the supreme sacrifice on the altar of press freedom” as one government official said regarding media killings.
We condemn the culture of impunity that encourages continued attacks on press freedom and to our democracy.
