Nasser Pangandaman Jr.: The Warlord of Masiu

28 December 2008 93 Comments

A Cabinet secretary and peace negotiator condoning the violence his son and friends were inflicting on an old man and a 14-year-old boy? By doing nothing to stop the beating, Pangandaman Sr. betrayed his skewed ethical and moral sense. President Arroyo should fire him.

By Carlos H. Conde

Philippine politics is feudal, this much we know. Nothing represents this better than the sight of officials – mayors, governors, councilors – being followed by armed bodyguards wherever they go, behaving like mafiosi.

This is more so with politicians from Moro areas. The context, of course, is that, in Muslim Mindanao, politics is much more deadly. In non-Moro areas, politicians have to contend mainly with their political foes. In Moro areas, politicians have to deal not just with their political opponents but with other tribes or clans with whom they are engaged in a rido, a Moro phenomenon where one clan fights another every chance they get. Rido sometimes lasts for generations and have immensely complicated the search for peace in Mindanao.

This is why, perhaps more than the non-Moro politicians, Moro politicians tend to surround themselves with armed goons and are instinctively paranoid toward other people. Coupled with the fact that holding a public office can screw up your sense of yourself – you tend to internalize the idea that you are a very important person, one who is untouchable and feared — these politicians tend to become arrogant and offensive. Power and guns usually have that effect on a person.

I am saying all this to contextualize the incident involving the mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur, Mayor Nasser Pangandaman Jr., his companions and his father, Agrarian Reform Secretary and government peace panel member Nasser Pangandaman Sr.  The Pangandaman party has been accused of mauling Delfin dela Paz and his son Bino at the Valley Golf Club in Antipolo City last week.

According to an eyewitness, Bambee dela Paz, the daughter of Delfin, Pangandaman Jr. and his friends mauled her father and brother while Pangandaman Sr. merely looked on.

In her blog, Bambee writes:

“The mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur talks with my dad. Things get heated up. Voices were raised. But never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever imagine that someone would pull out a punch. Apparently not. He attacks my father. His flightmates, maybe 2 or 3 of them, rush to his aid and beat up my father. My 56-year-old father. My younger brother and I could not just watch. We rushed to break the fight. My younger brother pleads to the mayor to please stop it. To not hurt my dad. To just stop. His words still ring through my head…”Sorry na po, sorry na po…tama na…tama na po…” With his hands in front of his chest in a praying position. PLEADING. The mayor socks him in the face. My brother defended himself. My dad is still on the ground getting clobbered. My brother is the same way. I try to stop the fight, but all I can do is stop one person. There were 4 or 5 of them attacking now.”

If the charges are true (the dela Pazes have complained to the police) and that indeed the elder Pangandaman just watched while his son displayed how arrogant and power-drunk he was (he allegedly told the elder dela Paz, “Don’t you know who I am?”), he should resign not just from the Department of Agrarian Reform but most especially from the government peace panel that is negotiating with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. There’s just no way he can function properly in that role, considering what we know now.

A Cabinet secretary and peace negotiator condoning the violence his son and friends were inflicting on an old man and a 14-year-old boy? By doing nothing to stop the beating, Pangandaman Sr. betrayed his skewed ethical and moral sense. If the government wants the peace negotiations with the MILF to succeed, Pangandaman Sr. should not be on the panel.

Pangandaman Jr. and Sr. are a disgrace to the good name of Liningding Pangandaman – father of Nasser Pangandaman Sr., former ambassador to Saudi Arabia and former governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Pangandaman Jr., evidently with his father’s blessing, acted like the warlord that he apparently is. The golf-course incident shows us what he is capable of doing with the little power he has. I now wonder what sort of atrocity he has been committing on the people of Masiu, a backward community in Lanao del Sur known for the violence and the cheating that goes on there during elections. I covered that place during the 1998 elections and I swore to myself I will never go back. I’m sure a lot of things have changed since then but, going by the behavior of its present mayor, I’m fairly certain it remains the backward, violent and feudal town that it was. Because only a town like that can produce a mayor like this.

    Hi. Thanks for this article.

The article is very disturbing: for a politician to do the thingy, and denied it, and turned the story upside down. As if sila pa ang nagulpi, etc. Like they have their bodyguards right? Amazing. Ang tanga ng mayor na ito, my apologies if my statement is rude.

I’m going to blog about this. Para umabot sa mas maraming tao ang maging aware about this.

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo appointed the father of this warlord. Obviously, this family is no family of peace and the father with his don’t care much attitude is not a man of peace either, yes, i agree with you – no semblance of morality, ethics and if i may add, good public governance. Serving the public is not in their vocabulary, therefore both of them do not deserve any of their post that they deserved to be fired.

Well, “good thing” that there’s a change in the DAR Chief’s problem, aside from the land reform. He should resign if he has no capacity of acting in a right frame of mind–this is a “simple” incident and he did not act accordingly, this proves that the DAR will not be better off more so the peace process with the MILF.

Oh and by the way, Mayor Nasser Pangandaman Jr. was just awarded this august 08 as “the most outstanding mayor in RP” it takes a lot to build a reputation like that, and just waste it like what we read in this story.
There are many inconsistencies in dela paz’s story.

  • Norodin Lucman said:

Precisely why we want full autonomy because we want to police our ranks, contrary to what we witness in Luzon and Visayas. Mayor Pangandaman is a product of your system, not ours, and he won as mayor because of GMA’s money and support, plus the AFP. Your electoral system is rotten and bribery is part of the landscape. Why do you think the MILF is fighting in Muslim Mindanao for freedom? Because we are sick and tired of the ass-backward system that Philippines employ in Mindanao, Manila’s corruption and anointed leaders in Mindanao. Give us MOA-AD and we will show you how we discipline our ranks, including your boy mayor.

After the Dela Pazes had aired out in news blitzkrieg their side of the story, the Pangandamans have come out with a knee-jerk rejoinder on the issue — claiming it was the senior Dela Paz or the daughter who started the melee by hitting one of the Pangandamans with a golf umbrella… Anyone with a common sense wouldn’t dare do such provocation against a person, much less a group of male (factors), surrounded by an omnipresent, intimidating cordon of pea-sized-brain and fully-armed bodyguards — whose purpose is to rabidly, blindly serve their handlers who feed them, and to do so regardless of consequences and at all costs since they anyway shall be covered with the extended mantle of impunity. That’s how it operates here in this Banana Republic. The people involved in the fracas are neither idiots nor weaklings, regardless of how they overnight image themselves as the victims. Stop playing possum, all of you – media practitioners and bloggers included. They are no strangers to pelf, power and influence either not to immediately distinguish their own kind. The filthy rich jealously, immediately dislike in their conceited viewpoint of exclusive, monopolized self-importance their own kind. Self-love breeds contempt against all others. I also have second thoughts entertaining the side-track comments of the Pangandamans that the Dela Pazes “acted as though they owned the territory (Valley Golf).” The bone of contention was but a “few minutes of ownership” of “privilege playing rights” of Hole Number Three at the time of the dispute — where the Dela Pazes contend that it was theirs in physical possession of at the time; while the Pangandamans insisted it was theirs in the first place as they were merely lagging behind a group that was already playing holes far in advance. Both parties argued for preference and priority — with or without advertence to Golf Manual 101. That was the deal breaker that broke the spirit of the Holidays. “Love of self, amor propio, ako muna bago kayo.” Can’t and don’t blame anyone — people who do so get crucified for doing right. Flashbacks of the Rolito Go parking slot shooting and that of the similar Loyola Cemetery parking fight episode. What I am certain of is that somebody burst a short fuse, and one act of intemperance and inconsideration paved the way for more violence and arrogance. The circus is now in town. The parties involved were supposed to play the gentleman’s game of golf — but, like overgrown brats as they all are really, did some other silly, childish thing that has found them now in the limelight of exchanging brickbats in full view of the nation. Regardless against the backdrop of what is supposed to be the Happy Holidays. I leave you to elevate your love of self in full view of the amused public. We can use some pointers for life. Be that as it may, lessons shall be learned the hard and painful way for all parties concerned. Good luck on this episode where only the devil gets to win! – JVC

I think that this story is definitely true. Why would such a normal middle-class family, more-so involving a young boy and girl, put themselves out there against people in position??? think about it. anyone who knows how politics in the philippines work (power-tripping, money laundering, etc etc) would know not to go against those kind of people esp if they are not “connected” to some kind of high-power. what would they gain from doing this if it was not true? why waste their time, efforts, money and esp put their name out there if only to be on the news right? I am 100% certain this is true. I am sure whoever from the gold club saw this incident is scared and have already been paid that’s why they are not helping or giving out info. I am sure that this would die down like lots of other incidents from other politicians unless it gets immediate action now!

    The Pangandaman Syndrome

    1. Everyone who has a semblance of decency knows who and/or what Gloria Macapagal Arroyo epitomizes.
    2. Nasser Pangandaman Sr. is part of the illegitimate government we have in GMA.
    3. Only those who have NO semblance of decency will accept a post in GMA’s Cabinet-full -of thieves.
    4. Nasser Pangandaman Jr acting as he did, is not surprising. The son thinks and acts as reared by his parents.

In short, the savagery, the brazen unleashing of unadulterated “power’ and utter lack of decency as exhibited by the father and son in the mauling incident is simply that – a crystal clear reflection of the kind of society we are all in under an unelected president.

Allow me to digress a bit – There are more than a few Pangandaman-pit bulls in Mindanao, and these people have always been untouched the “Islamists.’ The country has a long tradition of this warlord actuation, particularly more so in Mindanao. This to me speaks “highly” of how MILF deals with “un-Islamic” practices of their fellow Muslims in their littler corner which they want to rule over. It appears that for the decent Muslims in Mindanao, carving their land away from Imperial Manila could prove more disastrous.

What is common between the evil Mayor Nasser Pangandaman Jr. and the infamous writer Malu Fernandez aside from their evilness and infamy? Answer: they think they are a special class of human beings and therefore can say and do what they want with nary a regard for law or sensibilities of the Filipino people. What do I mean? And why I am resurrecting the issue of Malu Fernandez once again when Filipinos have already rendered her crime to Alzheimerland?

There is an easy answer to this and it lies in the poor quality and absence of common sense among politicians, writers, and other Filipino public figures. Public figures, whether you are a politician or a writer have a greater degree of responsibility to the people which should not abused. By beating a golfer after being reprimanded for jumping the line means Pangandaman thinks he is above the law and can get away with assault. It will be an injustice if this fool will not go to jail and stripped off his position as mayor. The guy does not deserve to be a mayor with his bullying tactics. His abuse of power is shameless. It’s right that GMA will pay close attention to the case of this abusive, power-mongering S.O.B. The only place and position he deserves is to jail and as the warden’s biatch.

And what about Malu? It’s amazing how many Filipinos still don’t get the real issue behind her infamous episode. Let me get it all straight for everybody. The problem with Malu is that, when she can talk about anything else, she criticized the lack of sophistication of the poor, which shows her better-than-thou elitist attitudes and her lack of common sense. Instead of helping bridge the gap between the rich and the poor which sensible people and writers should do, she decided to help widen it. Utter genius, eh?
Rule No. 1 if you want to be a responsible writer: Thou shall not incite class warfare or you’ll end up like Marie Antoinette. The true rich people do not flaunt their wealth and criticize the have-nots – instead they have inner sophistication and possess sympathies towards the poor. The truly great ones go out of their way to help and educate them. The nouveau-riche or the faux-riche on the other hand do not possess these attributes and will always go out of their way to criticize WHOM THEY ARE DISTANCING THEMSELVES FROM. They try hard to possess all these gadgets, buy the best brands, hang out in the trendiest places with the “cool” people and are always the first ones to criticize – all these superficialities on earth – so they could be grouped with the true rich. Instead they look like an embarrassment.

So what’s the point of this peroration? The point is that Filipino public figures should learn hard from these infamous episodes and possess a greater responsibility towards the people, regardless of social status, in their words and actions. Good thing the Filipinos are smarting out pretty quickly – for this I am proud to be one.

Why is this issue being about RELIGION and RACE…? kaya lumaki ang gulo kasi mga taong walang magandang comment. This is an issue about a misunderstanding which led to misunfortunate incident. Let us not show prejudice by giving comments that may aggravate the situation. Based from most, if not all the comments display discrimination in general because the Pangandamans are from Mindanao and specially they are Muslims. Let us stick to the issue and not show IGNORANCE of what we do not know. There is an investigation being conducted to find out what really happened and if the Mayor is indeed guilty….then let Justice prevail.

Wag na kayo magbigay ng kung ano anong comment at makigulo pa. Taking sides will just create more chaos. If you want support to the De La Paz or Pangandamans, find the truth and than give your comments in more professional manner. Hindi dahil kapareho niyo ng relihyon o pinsan niyo sila, may karapatan na kayo manira.

Just seen Pangandaman Sr. on TV Patrol appealing to us bloggers to lay off them. How pathethic! His warped sense of understanding makes him look like they are the underdogs. He doesn’t even understand what freedom of expression means. This is the only venue where we could express our feelings about abusive officials like them. Now they have felt the backlash of their despicable acts. And the nerve to say that his seven year old grandson is suffering from trauma as a result of all this! I’m sure nakaka-traumatize ang ganyang klaseng kahihiyan na gawa ng mga Pangandaman. You were the ones who created all this trouble so face up to the whole thing and explain to your grandson why it seemed you were never able to control your primitive instincts despite the influence of your environment. Your son, the mayor is obviously lacking in values or maybe you have not imparted any on him. How tragic! As government officials you are supposed to be role models for people to emulate. Instead you use your positions to oppress people. Even your fellow Muslims and neighbors are saying awful things about you, e.g. how power hungry you are, ang hilig hilig nyo pa daw magpa wang wang sa kalsada. What do you think of yourselves? Now, you must be feeling very important. Kilalang kilala na kayo! You don’t need to hire a PR consultant anymore since you are now very popular. Isn’t this what you wanted? Mga kulang sa pansin!

This is our beloved country that is withering before our very eyes. They can steal our taxes but they can never steal our spirit, our dreams and aspirations for our country and our children. Our numbers must increase and reach that critical 51% of the electorate hopefully in time for 2010. I admit I see no worthy successor in our decrepit political horizon at the moment but I do believe he walks among us. Let us band together and save our beleaguered motherland from all the filth that threatens to engulf it if we remain unconcerned, uninvolved or fearful. Below is an account posted on Pinoygolfer.com purporting to tell what exactly happened at Valley Golf. You be the judge.
    PinoyPress

    ===

I just spent some time with the head of the fact-finding committee. He has submitted all pertinent facts to the board and leaves it to them to make the necessary decision based on all the facts. I will outline the facts to you as it was outlined to me. Rest assured that the facts were obtained from all parties involved and all witnesses at each incident site. The statements were obtained both by the valley fact-finding group and by the NBI as well. Testimonies were recorded, verified, and re-verified. Fortunately for the parties involved, there were always witnesses to give supporting statements on the events as they occurred.

I will compose the outline shortly as it will be lengthy but just to whet your appetite or get you thinking, you will be quite surprised with the findings. Let’s put it this way, the people we thought of as villains weren’t quite what they were depicted to be. and the supposed protagonists may have yet been quite as factual in their testimony as it turns out to be. Even our 14-year old isn’t as innocent and “prayerful” when all the details come out. just give me a few minutes….

In the interest of making sure that no facts might be left undisclosed, I will take it upon myself to start from the very beginning. Firstly let us start by saying that on or at about 12:40 p.m., the party of the Pangandaman’s registered at the starter’s area. They registered for 2 flights comprised of 4 individuals per flight. Unfortunately, they still had 2 members of their group that had not yet arrived, so they initially tee’d off as 2 successive threesomes. The starter and marshall were informed that the 2 individuals that had not yet arrived would just catch up with them in the fairway. On or at about 1:05 p.m. the Dela Paz group registered initially as a twosome but since this isn’t normally allowed, they registered as a 3-some even if the elder Mr. Dela Paz was not really going to play.

When the Dela Paz 3-some was playing on hole number 3, they were passed by 2 golf carts containing Mayor Pangandaman and his companion (in one cart) and the caddies being brought by one of the starter personnell. The Pangandaman’s did not ask permission to drive through because they did not want to disturb the Dela Paz’s who were in the middle of the fairway. Upon reaching the green of the 3rd hole, Mr. Dela Paz asked the caddie why the people in the cart just went through. Mayor Pangandaman who was already positioned at the 4th hole, personally informed Mr. Dela Paz that they were part of 2 foursomes. At this point, Mr. Dela Paz said “ah okay, courtesy lang naman”. This was verified by the caddies. Mr. Pangandaman said that he did not disturb them anymore because the player was about to hit. At this point, Mayor Pangandaman thought everything was okay so he proceeded to the 4th hole (Par 3) where his other flightmates were. In the records it says that Mr. Pangandaman was not yet even done pitching into the green when a ball landed near his 8-year old child so they immediately made sure the child was secured in the cart. ( For those unaware of the common practice at Valley Golf, on every par 3, the group behind you is signaled to hit into the green once everyone from your group is already on the green) Until you have been cleared to hit by the group ahead, you should not hit into the green. It is common sense and basic precautionary procedure.

In this particular case, we have no corroborative testimony. One set of caddies say they were given clearance, while the other say that no clearance was given as of yet when the ball/s had landed.

The Pangandaman’s claim that the same situation happened in the 5th hole (Par5). Even the caddied confirmed this. At this time, Bambee Dela Paz had called the Marshall to tell him that the flight behind them was complaining about why their pace was slow and that the cause of the delay was the 5-some in front of them. Shortly thereafter, a marshall on his motorcycle appeared and approached the Pangandaman’s and asked if they were playing as a fivesome to which the Mayor said no. “We are 2 foursomes”. Nonetheless, the Pangandaman’s had already agreed among themselves that they would rather the Dela Paz’s play through. The Mayor was even quoted saying to his Father. ” magagaling yung mga bata at malakas pumalo, baka mabagalan sa atin” They informed the marshall that they would just let the Dela Paz group play through and the marshall informed the Mr. Dela Paz of this. (Just as an aside, the investigative group actually asked the group behind Dela paz if indeed they had complained about the slow down and the group said that the y said no such thing to the Dela paz flight. They were not even in contact at anytime before they arrived at the tee house to see the fight and eventually help stop it.) When the Delapaz group reached the green of hole 5, the caddies of the 2 kids gave them their drivers so that they would waste no time playing through. The Mayor, who at that time was sitting along with their companions, stood up to personally tell Mr. Dela Paz to play through. Caddies, and the tee house server claim that the Mayor told Dela Paz na “Mauna na ho kayo” and walked to approach Dela Paz, The response of Dela Paz was “Huwag mo akong pagtaasan ng boses” Dela Paz began to question the Mayor why they were playing as a fivesome. The Mayor said that this was not the case but Dela Paz was insisting and even said (again corroborated by the caddies) “Linoloko mo ba ako?” “Member ka ba dito, Kilala mo ba ako?” (as you can see, this question did not come from Pangandaman. In fact, in the recorded testimony, this is exactly what Pangandaman claimed delapaz had said to him and yet in Delapaz’ recorded statement, he never said that the mayor asked him ” kilala mo ba ako” Completely different from when the media was already involved.

When Delapaz was posing the above question, the mayor was heard to say. “Sandali lang, hindi naman tayo nagaaway dito. Akala ko ba naayos na natin yung issue kanina sa hole 3? At about this point Delapaz closed his umbrella and then poked the mayor on his stomach using the pointed end ( some caddies say Dela Paz swung the umbrella and some say that he poked the Mayor) The investigative board asked Dela Paz what he did, he said that he poked the Mayor in self defense. When asked who was attacking him, Dela Paz said that he was being surrounded by 4 men. The caddies and other witnesses on hand said that when the umbrella incident happened, it was only Dela Paz and the mayor that were talking. The other parties were in the tee house about 15-20 yards away. The Mayor says he was poked and so he backed off and just as he was about to be poked again, his brother, Hussein ran and attacked Delapaz and hit Delapaz knocking him to the ground.( At this point the commotion took place. One of the things observed is 14-year old Bino hit the Mayor with his driver. Apparently, the mayor parried with his forearm and hand so this is where he sustaned the injury. In the process also, Hussein was being pulled off the older dela paz by his 2 children but again Bino was seen to hit Hussein in the face and head while Bambee had scratched the other side of Husseins face. At this time also, witnesses say, that 3 or 4 other members of the flight excluding the Secretary, the 8-year old boy, and the girlfriend of Hussein were involved in attacking or subduing the older dela paz but this lasted very shortly and when the combatants had been separated the existing people in the tee house as well as the new flight that was playing behind the dela paz’s.

At this point the Secretary told the delapaz group to leave so as to avoid any more trouble. As the elder delapaz was leaving he was heard calling someone on his cellphone saying ” may away kami, pumunta kayo dito”
No one knew who delapaz was speaking to as he walked away towards the main clubhouse. A few minutes later, the secretary and his group decided to end the day instead of continuing to play. When they got to the clubhouse, Hussein wanted to wash up because he was bleeding in the neck area. As he got near the reception area, he saw delapaz and was heard to have said “O, nandito pa pala kayo” to which Dela Paz said “Hindi pa tapos ito gaganti pa kami”. At this point, Bino got in between his Dad and Hussein while saying ” Tatandaan ka namin” (None of the witnesses in the clubhouse, and there were many, ever saw Bino kneel and say that he was only 14 years old at maawa na sila) On the contrary, Bino was acting like anything but a helpless child. He sounded tough, angry, and antagonistic enough that the fight broke out again. At this point, the bodyguards of the Mayor ran into the clubhouse via the poolside entrance. When questioned about this, the mayor said that one was his driver and the other was his “Yayo”. As far as the board was concerned, the “Yayo” was also a bodyguard. Said Yayo came into the clubhouse with a clutchbag containing a gun and brought out the gun without pointing it at anyone. The Mayor immediately instructed him that there was no need for guns and the gun was put back. During the investigation, the Mayor said that the handgun was his and that his “yayo” was likely going to give it to him but he declined. Upon instructing his “yayo”, the man just stayed in one corner. At this time the wife of Dela Paz and his other son arrived. The son was wielding a baseball bat and the wife had a knife which she pulled out of a scabbard. These two were subdued by security but they were verbally threatening the Pangandaman’s during this time. There was also a reported incident where the driver of the mayor ran out and came back with a suitcase containing a supposed armalite as claimed by valley security. The driver never pulled it out or pointed it at anyone but it was readily accesible.

The end result is 100% corruption and abuse of power. The mayors share a little percent of the IRA to his family and bodyguards (usually belonging to the family circle) and the remaining which he used to buy guns, brand new and the most latest models of cars, and a new mansion in cities far away from where he was supposed to be working. So, what development would you expect??? The mayor enjoys the luxury in big cities, noting he only visits his municipality once a week, a month, or non at all. “Bibisitahin lang pag election time nanaman.” And the worst is for things like this, “dadalhin ang baho sa ibang lugar” for all other innocent muslims to suffer for the shame. Shame on this people.

They can easily overpower the 2 without hurting him.
    Not all Filipinos are stupid.

The ploy being played here is simple enough to be seen. Someone is coming out with a counterfeit story to discredit the blog by Bambee. This works to Pangandaman’s interest who stands to loose credibility, influence, power and ultimately their source of wealth. Judging on the reaction from most of the readers, this garbage being spawned is not being bought by most – unfortunately some people maybe confused – by simple credibility building statements like “collaborating witnesses”, “facts disclosed”, “confirmed by caddie”, “most of those who knows this guy (referring to Delfin dela Paz) ”.
This tone and style has worked much in Philippine setting as most people are quickly intimidated by legal jargon. What a smokescreen!

Unfortunately the stories’ basic facts are too incredible to believe. Mr dela Paz a hot head 56 year old father takes his 14 year old son and 18 year old daughter to the golf course and does not think twice in challenging 5 guys with guns. A 14 year old boy courageous enough to join the melee and not intimidated at all – ala Bruce Lee or Jacky Chan and an 18 year old lady who will fight with her claws at gun point. On the other end an angel of a Mayor with his brother and well behaved guards who sad to say unintentionally inflicted wounds and made the faces of the evil father and 14 year old boy all bloody in the act of self defense.

GARBAGE. PURE GARBAGE . EVIL, MALICIOUS – STUPID! A STORY SO FULL OF INCONSISTENCIES .. HOPEFULLY IT DOES NOT STAND IN PHILIPINE COURT.

Filipinos are no longer such Probinsyanos who will just swallow stupid stories like these at the benefit of abusive thugs in power.

Kung maangas talaga si De La Paz, I don’t think what he did was impossible. Hindi naman niya alam na mayor yung kausap niya nung una, at hindi rin niya alam na may bodyguard kaya naging matapang siya. Also, you keep mentioning that he was mauled by five men, are you sure? So, you’ll just base your conclusion on Bambee’s account?

I am not on anyone’s side, but for me, the Pangandamans may have used excessive force, but de La Paz is not totally faultless.

  • eninoy said:

Caddie – Do my own investigation? – get real. Hopefully the police, prosecutors and the court do that- their job.

I’m glad you agree that excessive force was used by the Pangandamans.

This is a forum of personal opinion -I’ve read the Bambee story and the “Pangandaman story” posted above. The Bambee story maybe faulted for its emotional overtones from a victim’s point of view. The Pangandaman’s story however is pure garbage (my opinion and I am not putting anyone inside a jailhouse for this conclusion).

Even in the Pangandaman story there were 5 men on the Pangandman side. According to the story that was Delfin’s contention – it was communicated to him that there are 4 but he saw 5. Clearly it was a case of 2 vs 5. Initially 1 vs 5 as it was only Delfin who approached – consistent in both Pangandaman and Bambee story.

Enough time has been spent here – hope the court sees the truth thru and gives out a just verdict.

I got this from a blog:

    Quote:
Pangandaman Jr.’s side of the Valley Golf Brawl
    From: http://pinoybiz.blogspot.com/2009/01/pangandaman-jrs-side-of-valley-go lf.html

I don’t know how long the brawl between the Pangandamans and Dela Paz’s at the Valley Golf and Country Club actually lasted but the story seems to drag on forever.

Today, the Dela Paz’s will be filing charges against the Pangandamans at the Antipolo Prosecutor’s office. Just right now, a report on DZMM says that they Dela Paz’s have acquired the services of Atty. Raymond Fortun.

So far, it is the Dela Paz’s side of the brawl at the Valley Golf and Country Club in Antipolo that has received a lot of attention on the internet and in traditional news media here in the Philippines.

DAR Secretary Nasser Pangandaman Sr. and Masiu City Mayor Nasser Pangandaman Jr. had each taken turns to air their side of the story two or three days after news of the incident broke out. Perhaps, this was after realizing that keeping silent regarding the incident was only doing more harm to them than good. Certainly, it wasn’t because news reporters weren’t interested in their side of the story.

Unfortunately, the Pangandaman’s silence during a crucial period allowed the Dela Paz’s side of the story to become well entrenched. By the time the Pangandamans did come out with their side of the story, a lot of people’s opinions on the matter had already been set and at this point, it will be very hard to convince people to change their views on the matter. The court of public opinion had already ruled the Pangandamans guilty of all sorts of crimes by the time they came out to defend themselves.

When Mayor Nasser Jr.’s issued his statement regarding the incident on DZMM’s Dos por Dos, not a few people drinking coffee that morning found themselves spitting their drink through their noses.

In the first part of his interview, Nasser Jr. said that it was Delfin Dela Paz who approached him and attacked him first.

Following his claim of self-defense, he explained certain golf rules in an effort to say that the Dela Paz’s were the first to break these rules and therefore paint them as unruly members of the Golf Club. Then Nasser Jr. said that at the Tee House between holes 4 and 5, it was Delfin Dela Paz who approached him, cussed at him, and then poked him with an umbrella.

Comments posted to the Youtube video of Mayor Nasser Pangandaman’s interview on DZMM’s Dos por Dos is somewhat indicative of the public’s opinion on his claim of self-defense. Of course, looking at the hundreds of comments on Bambi Dela Paz’ blog also reveals public sentiments against the Pangandamans.

Even a lengthy article in the Philippine Daily Inquirer describing the illustrious and sterling reputation of the Pangandamans did little to save them from a virtual flogging in cyberspace.

In anycase, I’ve always doubted that the Court of Public Opinion when it comes to finding out the truth in anything.

Right now, Bambi Dela Paz along with her brother and father Delfin Dela Paz are being cast in the role of underdogs in a fight against the powerful Pangandamans. Bambi has even been referred to the spokesperson in the media storm that has followed the wake of what has been called the Valley Golf Brawl.

Bambi seems to be the natural choice as spokesperson for the Dela Paz’, however, I doubt the soundness of the advice that probably led her to say: “Sana po mapalabas nila ang katotohanan. Sana ‘di sila [magpadala] sa kahit anong impluwensya (I hope they will be able to come out with the truth. I hope they will not be swayed by influence),” Bambee dela Paz asked the NBI during an interview with ABS-CBN’s Umagang Kay Ganda.

It insinuates that if the NBI’s investigation into the Valley Golf Brawl doesn’t bolster their side of the story, then the NBI must be working under the influence of the powerful Pangandamans. This isn’t fair at all, is it?

Then there is this rather lengthy post in Love Versus Vodka, a blog I stumbled upon, that gives Mayor Nasser Pangandaman Jr.’s side of the story.

    Quote:
The world is indeed screwed. Pangadaman side of story here.

The dela Paz siblings should be banned from jungolf & all golf courses.

They were a flight of two when the club prohibited it bacause it was a holiday. They went ahead & teed off + hit mulliganin hole 4 (par 3) w/o any warning when the flight of the Pangandamans was still walking to there balls to putt/pitch there 2nd shots. In hole 5 (par 4), they again teed off w/o warning when the Pangandaman players didn’t even hit their 2nd shots yet.

The Pangandamans peacefully proceeded with their game. They told the club marshall that dela Paz flight can go ahead. Delfin dela paz went to Mayor Pangandaman, shouted “PI mo, hindi mo ba ako kilala, member ka ba dito?”. dela Paz hit Mayor Pangandaman with his umbrella. The mayors older brother got the umbrella from dela Paz’ hand. dela Paz punched the Mayors brother . Bino dela Paz grabbed a golf club & hit the Mayor.

The Pangandamans wanted to leave the golf club when another dela Paz group attacked the Pangandamans with bats & ice picks at the main club house. – Testimonies from witnesses will prove that dela paz clan are liars. Mayor Nasser Pangandaman Jr. was awarded, “The Most Outstanding Mayor in RP”. Why will Mayor Pangandaman do something so low without being provoked? Delfin dela paz’ arrogance started the fight.

Real story: Your voices have been heard and now it’s time for us to let everyone know the real story regarding the incident in Valley Golf…..

An investigation has been initiated and we suggest we let it take its course. The other party has also aired its side. And it will be prudent to just wait for the results of the investigation. We pray and believe that the truth will come out and the issue be put to rest once and for all.

Below is a true and actual narration of the incident that happened last December 26, 2008 at the Valley Golf Club, Antipolo, Rizal.

On December 26, 2008 at around 11:00am, our group composed of Rene Maglanque, Sec. Nasser Panagandaman, Arnel Estacio and Atty. Faisal Abdullah registered to play with the Valley Golf on the first (1st) flight of our group. The second (2nd) flight was composed of Hussein Pangandaman, Adnan Pacasum, Nasser Pangandaman, Jr. and Farah Locsin. We also registered the eight year old son of Hussein named Angelo Pangandaman whom they cannot leave behind the clubhouse as there will be no one to take care of him.

Nasser Pangandaman, Jr. and Farah Locsin were late. They caught up with their flight (2nd) at hole no. 4 accompanied by a marshall and their caddies riding on two golf carts and in the process overtaking the flight of Mr. Delfin de la Paz who reacted by protesting what seems to be an overtaking of flight. Nasser Jr. explained to the elder De la Paz that they will just catch up and join their flight mates at hole no. 4. He further explained that they, who like them, had earlier lined up to play and were pre-registered. With the said explanation, del Paz replied “Okey, kortesiya lang.”

When the 2nd flight of Nasser Jr. already played hole no. 4 which is a par 3 and Nasser Jr. was still outside of the green trying to pitch his ball into the green, the flight of dela Paz hit their shots into the green which almost hit Hussein without shouting “Fore!”. Surprised, though sensing trouble which they deemed to choose to avoid, they allowed the other Dela Paz player to hit his shot so they can peacefully resume and concentrate on their playing. At this point, the caddy of Nasser Jr also took the 8 year old Angelo to stay behind the golf cart to avoid being hit by golf balls coming from the dela Paz players.

On the next hole which is hole no. 5, after the 2nd Pangandaman flight hit their drives into the fairway and before they could hit their second shots, again the dela Paz players hit their drives without warning by shouting “fore”! the 2nd Pangandaman flight puzzled and surprised asked themselves why the flight behind them were doing this to them since they could be hit by their golf balls. One caddy even said, “Ano ba yun?”

When the 2nd flight reached the green of hole no. 5 and after holing out, they joined the 1st flight of Sec. Pangandaman and took their snacks. While doing so, the marshall approached and told Nasser Jr. that the dela Paz’s were complaining why they were 5 of them in their group and why they overtook their flight. Nasser Jr. reiterated to the marshall what he explained to the elder dela Paz, which his knowledge the former already accepted his explanation.

Later, unconvinced even after the marshall relayed to him that there were only four (4) and not five (5) in their flight, and that they were not overtaking as they just had to go back to the clubhouse and later join their flight.

The elder dela Paz came and approached Nasser Jr. already agitated and pointing saying, “Mali ka! There were two carts in your flight and you overtook us!” Nasser Jr. answered, “Akala ko po, Sir, nagkaintindihan na ho tayo kanina”.

Explaining about them not overtaking yet elder dela Paz was not convinced , and at the top of his voice said, “p*ta ina ka! Member ka ba dito, ha?, Hindi mo ba ako kilala?”

Nasser Jr. patiently and respectfully explained again to him their side, even using “po” and “Sir” – as a sign of respect without revealing that he is the Mayor of Masiu, Lanao del Sur, and replied, “Bakit po kayo sumisigaw? Hindi po tayo nag-aaway”.

The elder dela Paz reacted, “Ikaw ang naghahanap ng away!”, while pulling his umbrella and thrusted the pointed part and hit the belly of Nasser Jr., while the latter was backing up.

The marshall tried to intervene but the elder Dino dela Paz pressed on which prompted and led Hussein to defend his brother. Dela Paz punched Hussein and they engaged in a fist fight.

Meantine, Nasser Jr., prevented the two (2) younger dela Paz from joining the fight by saying, “Awat na, Awat na”. but they got away from him and went in between their father and Hussein. The two young dela Paz was able to hold Hussein preventing him to reach the elder dela Paz as if “umaawat”. Yet, Bino Lorenzo dela Paz kept punching Hussein in the face and Marie dela Paz from behind kept on scratching his face.

In one instance, the elder Dino dela Paz took hold of a golf club driver and tried to hit Hussein. But, Rene Maglanque was able to get hold of the driver’s shaft and took it away from him.

Later on, Sec. Pangandaman, Rene Maglanque, and another golfer from another flight pacified everybody and asked the dela Paz’s to just leave them to prevent further trouble. Delfin dela Paz called someone in his cellphone and we heard him say, “Punta kayo ditto! May away kami!”

The dela Paz’s left. And, after about ten minutes, our group also discontinued playing and went back to the clubhouse. When Hussein was hurrying up to the bathroom to relieve himself and wash his wounds, the elder Dino dela Paz accosted him and warned him in a threatening voice, “Ikaw mag-ingat ka! Hindi pa tayo tapos! Gagantihan kita!”

Blocking is way to the locker room, Hussein replied, “Hindi ka pa ba umaalis? Sumusobra ka na”, the young Bino Lorenzo went in the middle saying, “Huwag po, fourteen years old lang ako”, and yet having his fist ready to give him a punch.

Hence, Hussein defended himself and the three engaged in another fist fight. Maridel dela Paz came from behind Hussein and started scratching Hussein on the right cheek, the neck, and ear, while pulling and tearing his shirt.

Immediately after, they were prevented from further engaging in a fist fight by those present in the clubhouse, the security and other golfers. But the elder dela Paz still shouted “Gaganti ako. Hindi pa tayo tapos.”

The rest of the dela Paz family arrived, with the eldest son carrying a baseball bat. The wife in “duster” with a bladed weapon in hand, as if ready to assault Hussein. They were likewise prevented by the clubhouse security and other golfers present.

At this point, Sec. Pangandaman told his sons to leave already and the dela Paz’s to stop and leave, so that no more untoward incident would happen. Soon, we also left but we had to leave through the parking exit because the dela Paz family was waiting for us at the clubhouse lobby. (END OF QUOTE)

One comment I have about the blog above is it is rather vague as to which part of the blog was written by the Pangandamans and which parts were the blogger’s. If the blogger can only make that clear.

I am one of the residents of Masiu. I felt sad when I read the description of the author to our Municipality as “a backward community in Lanao del Sur known for the violence and the cheating that goes on there during elections”.Pero yun ang mapait na katutuhanan because of the atrocities this family has been committing to the people of Masiu. Hindi nyo alam na ang mga PAMILYA yan ay mga gahaman sa posisyon?Majority of the baranggays in Masiu are headed by the members of this family.

for once…dont generalize something unless it is more than 50% of the case…hinihila mo lang ng pababa ang imahe nang mga pilipino…

…it just so happened na me nagreklamo sa “super bait” na kakilala mo..so…let them have a piece of their rights…if what they’re saying holds water…then you must have not known the pangandaman family after all…otherwise…then these are just hearsays…

I do admire you for being bold enough to share your opinions…ganun din ako…

@madz – if u really feel strongly about what u said…show proof…otherwise..naninira ka lang…unless of course in doing so…you would just put urself in a difficult position…now..sino naman ang may gusto non…

ganyan din siguro ang position ng mga dela paz…para silang lumalaban sa isang pader…given the fact that they are not known publicly as much as the other camp is known..but they are bold enough to do so dahil alam nila kung ano karapatan nila….me katotohanan man ang sinasabi nila o wala…

once again…opinyon ko lang po to…
