The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) expressed its support on the government following the ban on imported China milk products imposed by the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD).
The ban was enforced after the widespread poisoning caused by China-made milk products containing melamine, which has been found in formula and other milk products produced by 22 Chinese companies. Said chemical is primarily used in making fertilizers and chemicals.
PCCI President Edgardo G. Lacson also commends the prompt response of the Department of Health in revoking import licenses of companies involved in bringing in China-made dairy and milk products and the Bureau of Customs in issuing an order to all its district and port collectors in the Philippines to ban shipments of the same.
Immediately, PCCI issued an advisory to all its members and local chambers to avoid purchase and consumption of any dairy products from China until the DOH issues a clearance that it is safe to consume such.
Lacson articulated that it is high time for the country to heighten its consciousness on consumer protection and product safety. “As the voice of business, PCCI’s main objective is to protect the consumers—the very lifeblood of businesses,” he added.
He also emphasized the necessity to strengthen the monitoring of substandard products coming in and going out of the country as this would ensure that only quality products are sold in the market.
“The ban is just appropriate while at the same time, it calls upon our agencies to continue their close collaboration with each other together with the private sector so we can ensure the protection of our consumers,” Lacson stressed.
