‘Disarm, Dismantle Ilaga Vigilantes Now,’ Solon Dares Arroyo

PUBLISHED ON August 28, 2008 AT 6:54 PM ·

Anakpawis party-list Representative Rafael Mariano today dared President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to immediately disarm and dismantle the armed vigilante group Reform Ilaga Movement in the province of North Cotobato saying “the resurrection of the dreaded armed group will only escalate the armed conflict in the region and lead to massive human rights abuses.”

“We demand Ms Arroyo to immediately disarm and dismantle this armed group. In the first place, it is her security officials who are totally obsessed in vigilantism and instigated this through their call to arm civilians,” says Mariano.

Recent reports also cited Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Avelino Razon’s plans to distribute at least 1,000 shotguns to residents who would join police auxiliary forces in Mindanao. If the project would succeed, he said, the PNP would order 12,000 more shotguns.

He said that “the existence of this armed group will only escalate the armed conflict in the region and will not in any way help in the pursuit of a negotiated political settlement on the just demands of the Bangsamoro people to self-determination.”

Mariano said “sanctioning this armed vigilante group to exist will only heighten international perception that the Arroyo government shares the same notoriety of this armed group in extra-judicial killings, massacre, and other grave human rights violations.” #

  3. THe DEFENDER of ILAGA Says:

President Arroyo don’t disarm ILAGEA Vigilante group so they are the one to kill the NPA and the muslim MILF insurgence only ILAGA can stop their atrocities and now they are scared with ILAGA…. Let the ILaga kill them if they are brave to do atrocities then let thme do it … so they will see the Sting of the ILAGA (RAT) The Ilaga is poisonous.. thats why those NPA members and MILF members they are panic now of the ILAGA cos Ilaga can fight unitl death…BUt NPA and MILF they cannot fight face to face rhey fight same time they run.. 4. kwik Says:

we need vigilantes to fight the crazy mnlf and the weird islamic fundamentalists.

  5. koting Says:

why they scared the ilaga will eat ears only, the ilaga are tested in combat back in 1970’s they are like steel bodied what’s spectacular power they have.
dont worry milf the, ilaga will not harm anybody bec. they are still sleeping.

  6. Harrison Tolosa Says:

Why disarm or disband the ILAGA? The group proves itself to be very effective. We need the organization not only in Mindanao but also in all parts of the country to neutralize abusive people and/or criminal elements. Instead of disarming or disbanding the group, they must be given all the support needed.

  7. Uni Scholar Says:

Why disband them? Because they’re proven to be effective at killing everyone, not just insurgents. Certainly, there might have been some high-minded Ilaga that stuck to their morals, but for the most part they also killed Christian and Muslim civilians as well as anyone else who got in their way. Go read up on them. Civilian vigilante groups always, without exception, get out of hand. It’s tough to go back to being a poor farmer when you can loot, rape, pillage, and intimidate all you want.
