Monsanto has lobbied Washington heavily in gaining patent privileges under the copyright law of the U.S. And in promoting U.S. policies in other countries under the name of global development, countries are obligated to up hold the U.S. copyright laws.

U.S. copyright laws are forms of PROTECTIONISM. They don't want to share the know how or technology. Sharing technology would mean sharing capitalistic powers that U.S. commands. Other times they share in exchange for influence but only those technologies that are obsolete or 1st generation, which contain lots of problems.

To answer the question what can the government do to protect peasant farmers is nothing. Officials are lining up with their hands open for bribe money. U.S. along with other developed countries have the means to bribe so nothing can stand in the way. U.S. copyright laws will be implemented or no money at all to be had. It's sad but it's a fact.

As long as Philippines refuse to adopt U.S. policies, I say farmers have nothing to worry about law suits. And if they do come to file, I say to put them in a hole where the sun don't shine. What Monsanto and Washington did is unethical, just plain wrong.

In light of this, farmers need to keep away from salesman, these guys have no morals. They come in to promise all the money that can be earn, but details is in the specialized and expensive fertilizers. And there's no wander why only half of the seeds grew while half died even after all steps in farming were done. Or maybe farmers were coned into buying sacks of seeds in which half is bad seeds in order to increase sales volume, after all these peasant farmers don't know the difference.

There's a seed bank in the Philippines, I wonder who is running it and who are they affiliated with? I think that they are controlling seed supply without justification (global warming is not a justification I can accept). We should be alarmed or just notice it a little, somethings up. Why do Philippines have to import rice from Vietnam, is it because the seed bank is cutting the supply. Supposedly, they stand for research and development, where is it?

Seeds should be FREE, given by mother earth.

More importantly, as a society we need to protect farming resources: land, forests, ocean, rivers, and water supply for farming.

REMEMBER, farming and farmers are integral part of any society.

ADlibs,
Nonoy is not going to win. His riding on a wave based on his mother's death which is much different from his mother was on, people's power. Cory was the worst president. She only opened the vulnerabilities of the country for the taking. Erap and GMA are the product sum.

If you have any doubts, just look him very closely. He doesn't have IT. His sister, Chris, have bigger balls than him. She pronounces to the media (radio or others) in entertainment or political that she is going to defend his big brother. So you still think his got what it takes?

Regulate alcohol and beer in the Philippines because it only make people lazy, so drunk that they cannot work and think, leaves Pilipinos brain-dead, and increases the rate of babies which our farmers cannot feed resulting in death by hunger. Money for buzz and liquor, but no money for sustaining life; something is fundamentally wrong with this picture.
