Howie Severino’s ‘Butil ng Buhay’ Airs Tonight

PUBLISHED ON May 26, 2008 AT 11:29 AM ·

Butil ng Buhay

Airing on May 26, 2008, GMA 7
Monday night after Saksi

At a time of national rice crisis, the town of Lucban shows off its rice abundance as it stages its grand annual festival, the Pahiyas. Nothing will stop their tradition of turning palay into exquisite outdoor decor. But will a storm punish Lucbanins for their extravagance?

Howie Severino and his I-Witness team capture the drama of several farming families as they prepare meticulously for their colorful fiesta amid threats of a typhoon. They discover the recipe for the profusion of Lucban’s rice, and a possible path for other communities to avoid hunger.

Among the featured townsfolk is the perennial home decorating champion, Roni “Pahiyas” Unlayao, who meets his match right next door, the Salumbides family who create a magnificent facade that rivals Roni’s. In a last-ditch gimmick to upstage his neighbors, Roni catches an owl in the forest and makes it part of his facade.

The owl comes with a single week-old chick. When sudden tragedy befalls the chick on-camera, it feels like an omen of Roni’s downfall. Is this the year his victorious run ends? Will his misfortune parallel that of his town which braces for extreme weather on the day of the fiesta?
