Brian Gorrell Should Expect a Nasty Counter-Attack from DJ Montano’s Camp

PUBLISHED ON April 28, 2008 AT 10:11 AM ·

A curious thing is happening over at Brian Gorrell’s. Gorrell, as you should know by now, put up his wildly popular blog to collect money that he claims the “social climber” DJ Montano stole from him. For weeks since he put it up last month, Gorrell posted exposés after exposés on Montano, the so-called Gucci Gang, the country’s top social climbers and socialite wannabes and their cohorts.

The blog has gotten so big (and Gorrell has gotten so much worldwide media attention) that, inevitably, Gorrell himself had no choice but to talk about other things. Well, he did — and he got bamboozled by commenters in return.

Yesterday, Gorrell wrote a highly emotional — some say angry, bitter, unfair, etc. — post on the Cebu hospital scandal (or Black Suede Scandal). The negative response was overwhelming, to the point that Gorrell had to stop moderating the comments section and to post an item defending himself and his blog.

For some reason, many of his readers want Gorrell to just stick with the DJ Montano thing, and told Gorrell in no uncertain terms that he should not talk about other issues. Then many went on to chastise Gorrell using unprintable (in this site, that is) words.

But I suspect something else. I think the Montano camp is fighting back, using Gorrell’s own blog (although Gorrell moderates the comments, he also publishes those that are critical of him). There has been an increase of late of comments directed against Gorrell. Many of these comments have ended up on PinoyPress.

This, I think, is fine; the Montano camp certainly has the right to fight back through whatever means at their disposal. The question now is whether Gorrell will be able to manage this counter-attack without losing his equanimity.

Having said that, Gorrell should prepare for an onslaught of more nasty things about him. The thing is, by depicting himself not just as a victim but a very moral person who lives in the tranquility of his farm with his dogs, Gorrell set himself up for scrutiny by his readers, many of whom hate hypocrisy. (I’m not saying Gorrell is a hypocrite but his detractors will exploit any hint of hypocrisy, real or imagined, against him.) He runs the risk of exposure by his detractors. Now a celebrity and a public figure himself, he has pretty much defaulted on his right to privacy. If he has skeletons in his closet, whether they have anything to do with DJ Montano et al, he should not be surprised that some people will try their best to yank these out for all the world to see.

I predict that blogs will come out that will take a closer look at Brian Gorrell and his blog. Some will be critical, many will be nasty and many more will probably publish falsehoods about him. He will be minced and diced and grated on the Internet. But Gorrell, of all people, should see that coming. To use a phrase that he often uses to justify his attacks against Montano’s minions and relatives, Gorrell is fair game. And I can only wish him luck. (CC Hidalgo/pinoypress.net)
