‘Hooked to life after the stroke’
As a leading member of the Stroke Survivor Support Group at the Philippine Heart Center, Pomer joined the campaign of anti-smoking group, Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance-Philippines (FCAP) to pass the Graphic Health Warning bill in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
“I am very happy that increasing awareness has begun. Better policy making presents an alternative to life and protecting the next generation will be our legacy to the Filipino youth,” said Pomer.
She feels a lot more needs to be done as the tobacco companies continue to ignore the law banning outdoor ads. “I was just lucky, my two sons never got into the habit, probably as a lesson learned from my experience. But a lot of other children continue to be the helpless target of these companies’ advertising campaign,” added Pomer.
She realized everything happened for a reason. Her two boys are now professionals themselves who have completed their education through scholarships and sheer determination.
She could not believe she can write and yet she was able to produce two books, Life After A Stroke: Hypertension, the Silent Killer that is aimed at promoting a stroke-free society. This and her other book, Smell Something Good Inside are available at leading book store outlets.
As the current President of Kapisanan ng mga May Kapansanan sa Barangay Sun Valley in Parañaque where they reside, she continues to inspire the other members to fight for their rights as differently-abled persons. “We should prevent other people from taking advantage of our situation and assert our place and function as productive members of the society,” Pomer concluded. #
