Student Activism Takes Up Anti-Smoking

Carbonell, Lee and the BAC worked closely with Prof. Raymund Acedera, Managing Partner of Brandev Consulting who teaches Marketing in CBA, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance-Philippines or FCAP, World Health Organization, and the UP and UPCBA administration to stage the said contest.

According to Lee, the tobacco industry has admittedly focused on the youth in its marketing strategy and therefore “we should use the young breed of marketing experts to counter the industry’s marketing efforts head on.”

“The entries applied the same marketing principles used by tobacco companies, not to lure UP Diliman students into smoking, but to dissuade them from the habit,” Lee said.

The winning anti-tobacco campaign, according to Carbonell, is planned to be implemented in the UP campus. However, he said, the campaigns can be replicated in other schools.

“These campaigns can come to life as well as rid our country of the dangers of tobacco abuse from the ground up. We call on the Department of Health to help us find resources that we sorely need to make these campaigns happen,” Carbonell said.

“To make sure these campaigns are feasible, we intend to implement several of them in our campus as a test run. At the end of the day, UP IN SMOKE was an exercise in what UP students can really do for this country,” he added. (end)
