Deputy Minority Leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Satur C. Ocampo today said that Commission on Higher Education Chair Romulo Neri’s declaration of a “web of corruption” in government shows that crony capitalism under President Macapagal-Arroyo has become worse since the time of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Ocampo issued the statement after Rodolfo Lozada Jr. in his continuing testimony before the Senate hearing on the National Broadband Network – ZTE scandal yesterday narrated Neri’s December 7 presentation to Senators Panfilo Lacson and Jamby Madrigal on the country’s oligarchy-dominated economy and that Ms Arroyo was at the center of the country’s “web of corruption”.
“As disclosed by Lozada, Neri’s analysis of the high web of corruption in high places in government perfectly demonstrates how crony capitalism works under the Arroyo administration. This is worse than the Marcos era,” says Ocampo.
Ocampo recalled that “during martial law, Marcos use the State to take over media, telecommunications, ports and other strategic industries and installed cronies.”
“Today, Ms. Arroyo not only allows monopolies to intrude and dominate State transactions. Apparently, her own family and her cabal of supporters are in the middle of making the govt their own private business enterprise,” the militant lawmaker said.
Ocampo also said that “Lozada’s latest revelations on crony capitalism under the Arroyo administration further educated the Filipino on top level corruption in government.”
The Bayan Muna lawmaker also called on the people to join the scheduled protest on February 25, the 22nd anniversary of the first people power, and launch sustained protests actions on the brazen corruption and continue to search for the truth behind the NBN-ZTE scandal. #
