Deputy Minority Leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Satur C. Ocampo today dismissed the Arroyo administration’s revival of the Charter change campaign as a worn-out ploy aimed to divert the people’s attention from the scandalous National Broadband Network-ZTE deal.
Ocampo issued the statement after President Macapagal-Arroyo’s allies revived a campaign to amend the Constitution to set up a federal form of government.
“As happened in the so-called people’s initiative struck down by the Supreme Court, the politically isolated Arroyo administration’s renewed push for Charter change will only fuel unrest among the people,” says Ocampo. “The Arroyo administration desperately seeks to pacify the people’s collective fury with its Charter change scheme, already rejected as self-serving to Ms Arroyo.”
“It is a worn-out ploy meant to deflect intensifying popular revulsion directed at the President and her political family spurred by new revelations on the NBN-ZTE scandal, and to perpetuate a corrupt administration in power beyond 2010,” Ocampo said.
The Bayan Muna lawmaker also said that aside from seeking to win over the local officials, the Arroyo administration is sending a political message to the United States that it’s still the latter’s most reliable puppet in the country.
“Ms Arroyo is fully aware that ‘Big Brother’ is closely monitoring the recent political developments in the country. She is only reiterating her pledge to remove protectionist provisions on national sovereignty and patrimony in the Constitution as dictated by the US,” Ocampo said.
Ocampo reiterated calls for the people to join the scheduled protest on Friday saying “the planned protest aims to educate the public on the truth behind the multi-million dollar ZTE broadband deal and other venalities.” #
