The umbrella group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan today slammed the “blatant conspiracy to cover up the truth about the ZTE broadband scandal through the abduction of witness Jun Lozada.”

The group staged an “emergency protest action” in front of the Senate to express support for Lozada and the senators investigating the ZTE deal.

“We are witnessing one of the most outrageous attempts of the Arroyo regime to cover up the truth about its corruption. Malacañang ang the Philippine National Police conspired to abduct Lozada and silence him by making him sign manufactured documents. This is another low point for an already discredited administration,” said Bayan secretary general Renato M. Reyes, Jr.

“The people are becoming more and more outraged with the desperate cover-up tactics employed by the Palace. That Malacañang is part of this cover up is basis enough to call for the resignation of the president,” Reyes added.

Bayan is also calling for the resignation of PNP Chief Gen. Avelino Razon and the head of the Police Security and Protection Office because of their involvement in the cover up.

“They gave the public and the Senate the run around. They are clearly part of the cover up. They should be ashamed to stay in office a minute longer,” Reyes said.

Bayan said that Jun Lozada’s statements implicating First Gentleman Mike Arroyo and former Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos in the bribe-tainted ZTE deal should bolster calls to make Gloria Macapagal Arroyo accountable.

“There is very strong basis to impeach Mrs. Arroyo given all these new facts. These things happened right under her nose and she did nothing to stop them. The important thing now is to sustain public pressure on the administration and provide support for Lozada and others who can testify against the regime,” Reyes said.

“Even Romulo Neri should consider changing his position of silence and speak out,” the Bayan leader added.

Black Friday protest set

Various anti-Arroyo groups are set to hold a “Black Friday” protest caravan tomorrow, February 8, to protest what they called “gross corruption and abuse of power” under the Arroyo regime. Issues to be taken up include the ZTE scam, the abduction of Lozada and the term extension of AFP chief of staff Gen. Hermogenes Esperon.
The protest action comes a day before the 56th birthday of Esperon who was given a 3-month term extension by President Arroyo. ###

I feel sorry for the people in the Philippines. Many Filipinos are already experiencing severe poverty and work so hard to just earn a living. In most cases, what they earn is not enough to make end meet. In many cases, families had to be separated to go work overseas so they can help their family. The fact is: they will never be able to take themselves out of this ‘Poverty’. The Philippine govt has to increase tax and cost of living so that Philippines’ debt can be paid for. But who is paying for it: he filipino people whilst the corrupt government official who pocketed $130 million US (and other parties) are taking a luxurious lifestyle whilst stealing $ money where they can.

  4. luigi Says:

I’m afraid for Jun Lozada coz the ARROYO Government is capable not only of ’stealing’ but also of ‘Murder’ just to save themselves and live like queen and king. Maybe US needs to intervene. Maybe someone should ‘Publicized’ this to the U.S government and other investors. Coz in actual fact, even if the phil govt pays it off (actually it’s the filipino people - not Arroyo admin who is paying the debt, the investors are also losing some money because they are investing their money in the Philippines but it’s economy is just getting worse (major cause: Corruption). The longer Arroyo stays - next thing you’ll here is ‘Arroyo’ selling Phils to another country and therefore Philippines will just disappear from the face of the earth (maybe i’m exaggerating but I hope it drives the point)..

  5. Eduardo Barrera Says:

Arroyo must really resign right now. . after all of the things that Jun Lozada said about the scandal that arroyo and others did, she must really resign. . that president is a joke!!!

  6. Manny C Says:

President and Co. seem to have gotten their hands caught in the cookie jar. There should be repercussions otherwise they will just keep repeating it. Filipinos are doing the right thing expressing their sentiment by whatever “non-seditious” means available. The Senate hearings are serving to inform Filipinos of what did, could’ve, didn’t, may have happened. Hopefully the people are smart enough to sift through all the truths, non-truths and propaganda and decide for themselves what they believe to be true and take action. Sometimes you really just can’t take it anymore.

  7. Bong Dizon Says:

Arroyo is evil, granted … the people around arroyo specially her husband are corrupt granted … but what give us the guarantee that if Arroyo was ousted corruption will stop ?, ang problema sa pinoy masyadong short sited. Ano bang gobyerno after ni Marcos ang hindi corrupt ?. Even Cory government was riddled with corruption and innocent, LEAN ALEJANDRO a promising leader was killed during Cory Time. So where the Farmers massacred in Mendiola. Joseph Estrada Plundered the government during his time worse than Marcos, his cronies manipulated the stock market to the point of bankrupcy and how about DACER ?. Lozada come on he is also corrupt to his teeth , which he admitted. Sabi ng Simbahan and the opposition at least he admitted … So what if they admitted and repented did he return what he have stolen ?, the problem is the same with Marcos, Estrada they refuse to return what they have stollen our church and opposition seems to forget these.

So now GMA, if we kick GMA can we get what she and her cronies have stolen ?, or will we end up with a bankruot government again where we need to raise taxes and migrate just to earn a leaving ?
The problem with these country, we dont look at things deeply … we are “ningas cogon” on everything. Our problem are not personalities . (GMA,MARCOS,CORY,RAMOS,ESTRADA). Our problem is the SYSTEM. Patronage Politics, Oligarchical Politics … unless we go deeper to our problem … no matter kahit sino ang maging presidente this nightmare will continue.

  9. Fil-Thai Says:

you know what guys, it is only us and the filipinos are making things more and more complicated…Straight to the point, Arroyo may have done a corruption but not “per se” a corruption…She did not steal money from the country’s treasury, did she??? Besides, the ZTE contract has been cancelled. So what is the reason of making this issue into celebrity? We are fond of complicating things that makes our lives, economy, politics, and everything complicated…People rally the streets for her ouster…Question: Did they understand why they rallied down the streets? Mostly did not even know what is the real issue behind ZTE contract. You see? The contract has been cancelled meaning, Arroyo did not want the anomalies to prolong…So, why is there a need to “quack-quack” and make things difficult. I think the better way is to shut up and leave things done…As for me, GMA still’s the best…Look what she did in our economy…She is far better off than Ramos, Cory and Estrada…SAWAT DEE KRAP!!!

  10. jack Says:

    Gloria Resign!!!

dapat sinasalang si jun lozada sa lie detector test para malaman kung nagsasabi sya ng totoo o hindi…tsaka di ba dapat kasama sya sa mga dapat ikulong kasi kasama din sya dun sa zte na yun

  12. akodin Says:

“…As for me, GMA still’s the best…Look what she did in our economy…”

yeah, i agree with you Fil-Thai. just look at what she did in our economy. she plundered it. just look at the undeniable truth:

“The NSCB’s Official Poverty Statistics report for 2006 reveals that some 700,000 Filipino families were added to the ranks of the poor in the three years between 2004 and 2006. That brought the total, as of 2006, to 4.7 million families.”

“The NSCB report found that in the three years of the study period, some 200,000 families were added to the ranks of the “food-poor”—bringing the total to 1.9 million.”

now you are even saying she is the best. idiot.

  13. gregorio marcial Says:

The photo was first published by the Philippine Human Rights Reporting Project with this caption: "An urban poor woman feeds her youngest child while washing clothes for a living and looking after other children.
