Senator Loren Legarda yesterday said that the Philippines has pressing problems like poverty and the spiraling prices of oil products to concern itself already with the 2010 elections.

“The prices of oil in the world market had already breached $100 to a barrel, which would surely have serious repercussions on our economy in 2008,” said Legarda.

“Likewise, while we Filipinos are born optimists, poverty and hunger remain as big problems that we have to address,” she added.

Thus, Legarda said that while there is nothing wrong for political parties to “sound off” and prepare for 2010, they may prove to be more of a distraction to the nation.

At the same time, she explained that political developments leading to the 2010 elections can still change the political landscape.

“Based on my experience in the past three elections, line-ups are usually formed just months ahead of the election,” she said.

“So, the pronouncements we are hearing at present may be just to test the waters,” Legarda added.

Legarda topped the 1998 and 2007 senatorial elections and had put under protest the result of the 2004 vice presidential election.

Bruited about as a top contender in 2010 on account of her pro-people and pro-environment advocacy, Legarda is the only political leader to top the senatorial elections twice, aside from former Senate President and constitutional icon Jovito Salonga.
