Do not be like a modern Makapili like Sen. Santiago
The militant Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) challenged Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II to stand up for the Filipino people and our interest against the Japan-Philippine Economic partnership Agreement (JPEPA) and not do a complete turnaround as Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago did.
According to Danilo “Ka Daning” Ramos, secretary general of KMP, “we hope that Sen. Roxas would side with the peasant masses and the Filipino people in opposing the JPEPA. We hope that he would not be a sell out like Sen. Santiago, who for all her talk that after numerous rounds of the JPEPA proponents being beaten in Senate hearings and that she is siding with the opponents of deal will suddenly turn her back and arrange for its ratification,”
“Along with Sen. Roxas, we are asking all patriotic senators not to be like modern day Makapilis and not to betray the country with this terribly onerous deal. We are not against trade but trade should be based on reciprocity, mutual benefit and equal footing, not blackmail that we will not get Japanese aid if JPEPA is not ratified,” said Ramos.
JPEPA like the RP-China Economic Agreement is part of the Aid for Trade package of the World Trade Organization designed to circumvent the derailed Doha round of talks, it is like free trade agreements and bilaterals, which are basically tied aid it that have conditionalities and numerous strings attached.
“We are banking on Sen Roxas to protect the Philippine’s interest against this impending new Japanese invasion. If he fails then his presidential ambitions would definitely suffer,” ended Ramos. # # #
