Philippines: Reimposition of Anti-Subversion Law Prelude to More Abuses?
The militant Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) lambasted Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for once again engaging in double talk, trying to fool and threaten the Filipino people at the same time, by pushing for the reimposition of the Anti-subversion law.
According to Rafael “Ka Paeng” Mariano, chairman of KMP and concurrent president of ANAKPAWIS party list, “while Gloria is talking about declaring a yuletide ceasefire and supposedly preparing for the resumption of the peace talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), now she is also working to further persecute those that supposedly she is extending her reconciliatory hand to. To any layman it is obvious that the Macapagal-Arroyo regime is a clear backstabber and not in the least sincere in talking peace,”
“She is saying one thing and doing the opposite. Actions speak louder than words. Just the other day Gloria was saying that no one should be killed or persecuted for their political beliefs and now she has turned to the opposite direction. The regime is just trying to scare people from expressing their dissent against the atrocities of this administration by trying to push for this draconian measure. The reimposition of the Anti-subversion law will definitely be a prelude to more human rights violations,” said Mariano.
“Besides if the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is so confident that the communist movement would be inconsequential by 2009, why reimpose this law? Or as often the case the military is just boasting and the opposite is true?” asked the peasant leader.
“What we must do is unite once again to stop this new round of attack to civil liberties guised as an anti-communist campaign, an old trick that was employed in the 1950s and 60s, but ultimately a failure in stopping the mass movement from striving for real democracy, justice and freedom. We failed it then and we will do it again,” ended Mariano. # # #
