Philippines: Bulletin, PDI and Business World journalists scribes win Burgos awards for biotech journalism

JOURNALIST from the Manila Bulletin, Philippine Daily Inquirer and Business World topped the Third Jose G. Burgos Jr. Awards for Biotech Journalism awarded yesterday at the Balai Kalinaw in University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City
Melody Aguiba of the Manila Bulletin, Delmar Cariño of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Jo Florendo Lontoc from Business World bagged the first, second and trhird prizes, respectively, of the awards sponsored by the Biotechnology for Life Media and Advocacy Resource Center.
Aguiba won for her article “Filipino scientist secures patent for ‘bioplastic’” while Cariño was awarded for his article “Forests get new hope in the cloning project.” Lontoc was recognized for his article “UP scientists trying to help abaca industry.”
The winners received P30,000, P20,000 and P10,000 respectively, and plaques of recognition.
Broadcast journalist Angelo Palmones, DZMM station manager and president of Philippine Science Journalists Association of the Philippines Inc. (PSci Journ), was given a special citation in recognition of his outstanding and consistent commitment in popularizing biotechnology.
The newspapers Manila Bulletin, Philippine Star and Business Mirror garnered the first, second and third prizes, respectively, for publishing the most number of biotech stories in the past year.
The Burgos biotech journalism awards were in partnership with the Samahang Plaridel, an organization of eminent and veteran journalists and the PSciJourn.
The awards board of judges was led by Mr. Rolando Estabillo, president of Samahang Plaridel and vice president for corporate communication of the Philippine Airlines, as chairman. Members were Dr. Luis Rey Velasco, chancellor of the UP College in Los Baños; Dr. Mariechel Navarro, manager of the Global Knowledge Center of Crop Biotechnology of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA); Ms. Rosalie Ellasus, president of Philippine Maize Federation Inc.; and Mr. Palmones. Mangled and Mutilated. Rey Cayago, an activist who previously worked for the migrant group Migrante, has been found dead, his head cut off, his face and body mangled. Family and friends denounced the military for the atrocity; the armed forces had alleged that Cayago was a communist guerrilla who was killed in a firefight in the Cordilleras. But human-rights groups contend that even if Cayago were a rebel, what happened to him was "inexcusable" and a "blatant violation of the protocols of war." Click here for the story. SHAMED AND HUMILIATED. The staff at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu humiliated a gay man who underwent a rectal procedure. But the hospital refused to name those responsible for the shameful act.
