Greenpeace welcomes the declaration by ASEAN leaders acknowledging the
importance of the success of the UN Climate Change conference in Bali.
Greenpeace calls upon the ASEAN to back up the Singapore declaration
with a real action plan to combat climate change. ASEAN nations can make
a huge contribution to the global efforts to avoid the worst impacts of
climate change by embarking on a low carbon path for sustainable
development by harnessing the massive renewable energy potential in the
region and at the same time curbing deforestation.
It is critical that ASEAN takes a leadership role during the Bali
climate negotiations to ensure that the Kyoto Protocol is extended and
expanded with deeper emissions reductions under the second commitment
period and reject unworkable voluntary and aspirational proposals from
countries like U.S. and Australia.
Greenpeace also calls upon the ASEAN rainforest nations to focus their
collective efforts to urgently halt deforestation by declaring an
unconditional moratorium on all logging and forest clearance activities
in the region and demonstrate their commitment to combating climate change.
