Their pension benefits vary depending on the years of creditable
service of the member. For the survivors of deceased members who have
15 years or more of creditable service, if the member died while in
the service, the survivorship benefit shall be the survivorship
pension and cash payment equivalent to 18 times the basic monthly
pension. For members who died while no longer active in the service
and had previously served for 15 years or more in the service, the
survivorship benefit shall be the survivorship pension only.
For those who died while in the service and had served less than 15
years of creditable service, the cash payment benefit of the survivor
shall be an amount equivalent to 100 percent of the average monthly
compensation for every year of creditable service of the member.
For those who died as an inactive member and was less than 60 years
old at the time of death, the cash payment/benefit of their survivor
shall be an amount equivalent to 100 percent of the average monthly
compensation for every year of creditable service, but not less than
P12,000, provided that the deceased member had at least three years of
creditable service.
The survivors of members who died with the status of an inactive
member and were at least 60 years old at the time of separation from
the service shall not be entitled to receive survivorship benefits.
Applications for survivorship benefits should be filed within four
years from the death of the member or pensioner.
For the spouse, the monthly pension will be suspended if his/her
active status is not renewed on the birth month of the pensioner. On
the other hand, the pension will be stopped upon the death of the
spouse or if the spouse remarries.
Meanwhile, the monthly pension for the child will be stopped when the
child reaches the age of majority (21 under Republic Act 660 and
Presidential Decree 1146; 18 under R.A. 8291), or during instances of
marriage, employment or death.
Aside from serving as an ATM card and facilitating the annual renewal
of active status through the G-W@PS, survivorship pensioners can also
use the eCard Plus as an official GSIS ID card, debit card and
hospitalization discount card in select partner-hospitals in the
Philippines under the GSIS Hospitalization Support Program.

CARLOS H. CONDE Bloggers who benefited from the power of blogging to correct the injustice done to them have a duty to pay society back. And the only way I can think of is for them to raise hell, too, about the injustice done to other people.
Years From Now
NINOTCHKA ROSCA While lining up for kona coffee ($1.95 per 8-ounce Styrofoam cup) at the central kiosk of the food court of the Ala Moana Center, I suffered a mild fugue. Like palimpsest, the image of the food court at the Ali Mall in Quezon City, Philippines, seeped through the environs; surely, that must have been the ancestor of all food courts in the world.
Nasser Pangandaman Jr.: The Warlord of Masiu
CARLOS H. CONDE A Cabinet secretary and peace negotiator condoning the violence his son and friends were inflicting on an old man and a 14-year-old boy? By doing nothing to stop the beating, Pangandaman Sr. betrayed his skewed ethical and moral sense. President Arroyo should fire him.

Cory Aquino’s Betrayal
CARLOS H. CONDE What other ignominious crap will Corazon Aquino inflict upon us? An icon of democracy and moral leadership? Hah! She is an icon of everything that is wrong with this country.
