5 PHOTOGRAPHERS (PART 3):
A tribute to 5 pioneering masters of Philippine photojournalism.

The exhibit will open on November 22, Thursday at 6pm and will consist of
photographs/photographic essays from five of the country¹s foremost
photojournalists: Joe Gabor, Romy Vitug, Mario Co, Silverio Enriquez, and Ed
Santiago. These five photographers represent a critical time in Philippine
photojournalism, when photography was in its nascent state as a form of art.

The first 5 Photographers exhibit was mounted in 1967 in the Indigo Gallery,
run by no less than Bencab, now National Artist for the Visual Arts. He was
then layout artist at the Sunday Times Magazine, where all of the said
photographers had contributed to or worked at some point in their young
careers. The five stood out amongst the others then because of their
sensitivity of expression, imagination, and ability to ³(raise) the prosaic to
the level of astonishment, the lyrical, and not the least of all, imposing a
significance on what is often taken for granted, ignored, despised,² according
to writer Emmanuel Torres, who wrote the exhibition notes for the second 5
Photographers exhibit in 1973.

The chosen works in this exhibit shall be the best of the best the 5
photographers produced during that Golden Age of Filipino Photojournalism.
They are works that reflect the changing political, economic, social, and
cultural scene of those times. More important, they not only show how these
particular Five saw their fellow Filipinos, but how Filipinos saw themselves
during that era. This exhibit will run until December 20.

Curated by photojournalist Jose Enrique Soriano, 5 Photographers was awarded
the silverlens foundation Curatorial Grant for 2007.

Jose Enrique Soriano is an experienced photojournalist specializing in news
and social documentary photography and portraiture. He has traveled
extensively all over Asia and to France, Australia, Canada, UK and the US for
short and long term photo assignments for picture agencies, magazines,
newspapers and corporate clients, as well as for personal documentary work.
His photographs have appeared in Life, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, in Observer and
Daily Express (London), and in Elle and Cleo (Singapore).

The silverlens foundation was established in 2006 in Manila. SLF provides
professional and financial support through completion, acquisition, exhibition
and cultural exchange grants. The foundation aims to institutionalize its
efforts through the establishment of a lending collection of contemporary
photography and a reference library.

As a part of the Saturday gallery events for 5 Photographers, there will be a
panel discussion about the Golden Age of Philippine Magazine Journalism with
photographers Ed Santiago and Romy Vitug and writer Eugenia D. Apostol on
December 1, from 3-5PM. On December 8, also from 3-5PM, there will be a
Portfolio Review where photographers are invited to sign up for a one-on-one
review with the remaining of the 5 Photographers (RSVP required). silverlens
gallery is located at 2320 Pasong Tamo Extension, Warehouse 2, Yupangco
