NPC bares threats to officers
The National Press Club today bared that one of its officers has received threats in the wake of the controversy over the painting on press freedom that it commissioned a group of artists to render.
NPC president Roy Mabasa said the controversy appears to have generated so much heat, which some groups might be taking advantage of.
Last Thursday antigovernment protesters stormed the NPC building in Intramuros and managed to go up to the fourth floor where the painting was installed.
“They were carrying cans of paint and shouting antigovernment slogans, apparently with an intent to destroy the painting,” Mabasa said.
This prompted the NPC to remove the painting for the meantime to prevent it from being damaged, he said.
Mabasa said they have also received reports of similar “protests” in the coming days that could compromise the security of the NPC premises.
With these developments, Mabasa said the NPC has decided to no longer issue further statements so as not fan the controversy any longer.
“We believe all issues from both have been sufficiently ventilated and we should leave room for things to cool off,” he added.
