You want to know how poor Filipinos are doing, how they are coping with the hardshipS they face, and what they are willing to do to make their lives a little better? Go watch Wowowee, ABS-CBN’s popular noontime television show.
A key part of the program is a sort of quiz show with ordinary folk as contestants — jeepney drivers, balut vendors, laundrywomen, ordinary housewives, etc. Before each quiz, the host, Willy Revillame, chats with the contestants. Here, they pour out their problems and the difficulties they face — the problems at home, at work. They also express their affection, sometimes hatred, to the people they love.
The interviews are heavy on humor, wit and pathos. They dance. They sing. They make fun of themselves. It’s not always dignified. But they do it just the same. Most say they join the contest because of the prizes, which include a “kabuhayan” or livelihood showcase. I haven’t heard of any contestant saying that she made a fool of herself on national TV just because she liked it.
Wowowee is extremely popular. But that is only because many poor Filipinos are extremely desperate.

Wowowee is a great show without all the other controversies and annoyances surrounding it that makes the show more of a waste of airtime. For example, the too sexy almost naked ASF dancers and stripper like dancing (c’mon it’s on at noon time, put some clothes on!)). Also, Willie’s shameless promos of his songs that he MUST sing in the beginning of every show. Sure he’s the host but does he have so shamelessly plug his album on every episode? Willie also likes to make fun of the contestants which is also annoying. If the contestant is gay/lesbian/tomboy, he likes to ask the person even at times forcing the person to come out that he/she is gay. Wowowee is a great show for the poor but not worth it to get prodded around by some shameless promoting host who cares only about his ratings and the number of albums sold.
