The PinoyPress Top 10: Great quotes from Malu Fernandez

PUBLISHED ON August 24, 2007 AT 10:02 AM

The following quotes are from Malu Fernandez’s articles in Manila Standard Today.

1) Call me whatever you like but when you are trapped in economy class that is filled to the brim with migrant workers the smell gets a little funky after nine hours of flying.

2) Every woman can be her own beauty artist and realize simply and in a funny way a perfect make up as professionals.

3) Don’t stress out if you can’t find seating. Chill out and be cool. You can always talk standing up. Pretend you’re at the bar or go for a walk.

4) When I was growing up in my teen years even as far as today I often got complimented on my skin. You see, I never had problems with acne or large pores. Perhaps it was the strict regiment I had of taking care of my skin, genetics or the fact that I come from three generations of Dermatologists.

5) My favorite nephew, Miguel Zubiri, prefers Gio by Armani for himself but he absolutely loves Estee Lauders’ Pleasures, a scent he personally picked for his wife Audrey.

6) Patience is a virtue I sorely lack and dealing with stupidity is something I cannot tolerate but something I have to deal with in this God-forsaken country of ours.

7) Although it may sound elitist to you the fact is this country is built on the foundation of haves, have-nots and wannabes. One group will never get the culture of the other.

8) In the late nineties, I was traveling so much between Europe, Asia and the United States, I used to wake up in the middle of the night and not know where I was.

9) People like me who are trying to lose weight have enough problems trying not to eat the wrong thing. Now all I have to do is sit in my car, drive through and watch my ass get bigger with every bite of the famous (Krispy Kreme) doughnut.

10) Those of you who don’t know the brand Zara, are either living under a rock or all your clothes are from the ukay-ukay.

  1. sparks Says:

I first saw Zara in Madrid. It looked more like Petit Monde than the high-end shop being marketed in the Philippines. Same can be said for Marks & Spencer.

  2. BBMA Says:

I hope Miguel Zubiri nor his wife Audrey aren’t anything like thier “Aunt.” Maybe I’ll send our good Senator Axe deo-cologne for men and his lovely wife, Charlie for women (by Revlon) and see if they’ll stink up the place (which I doubt) as she vehemently implied.

Maybe go as far as locking them in a room together. See if she calls it her “private hell?” or does her sentiments only apply to OFW’s and poor people like me?

  3. anton abad Says:

malu is the perfect bitch everyone wants to crucify, not only because she’s not beautiful, but more so because she tries to be witty and humorous but ends up looking pathetic. i’m so sorry for her. if she had had the face of ruffa gutierrez then people would not be as vexed.

c’mon, some middle class really look down on other ofws and their rather rowdy culture (which is not to say these ofws -dh and construction workers - are not middle class). but to actually employ this attitude to sound “witty” in print is another thing. thanks to media, ofws in general have gained a “bagong bayani” identity, and it is politically incorrect to verbally prejudice them.

malu, you are so dead already.

  4. jan michael Says:

hoy malu! nakakhiya ka. instead of billeting the ofw’s and what you so called “migrant workers”, why don’t you just help build up morale for us pinoys who for now you called as having no culture. you might have been blessed with so much materialistic things and with an intelligent mind for writing articles but bulok ang isip mo sa ideas!. i’m a son of an ofw and sa ginawa mong article na yan, you can’t blame me but be so irated with you. ang kapal mo namang mag comment ng ganon collectively for filipinos aborad, and yet di mo inisip sarili mo na kung hindi sa pawis at pagod ng mga kamag.anak mo, di mo matatamo yang pagiging mayaman mo. even one time, dukha din pamilya mo. tandaan mo yan. no one has ever been ana instant “mayaman”. nakakahiya ka. sana nga lang di ka atakihin ng pagka.maldita mo. baboy! kala mo kung sinong maganda. maganda ka lang sa kaibigan at pamilya mo ulol! mukha pa lang, ang lapad na. eh mas maganda pa kaya auntie ko sa yo kahit dukha lang siya.

  5. noypi Says:

    http://www.manilastandardtoday.com .

Buti na lang nag resign na siya.

    Mabuhay mga Pinoy!

  6. Isabel Untalan Says:

ask ko lang, ano na ba nagawa mo na maganda malu fernandez? what is wrong with ukay ukay? nasa nagdadala lang iyan, we OFWs can afford what you have, kaya lang we spend our hard earned money wisely, saka di kami mayabang na tulad mo.sobra kang makapanlait ng kapwa mo, am almost 6 years older than you and am glad am aging with achievementand wisdom. ikaw tamang kasabihan na tumatanda ka na walang pinag katandaan. sukatan mo sa pagiging tao eh mga materyal na bagay na di mo madadala kahit saan ka mapunta once na ang hininga mo eh huminto na ano? aber nga dalhin mo nga ang mga sinasabi mo na mamahaling gamit mo pag namatay ka?

  7. ProudPinoyOFW Says:

It’s really a sad state of affair, when someone who obviously had been blessed a lot, breeding, education and all had to deride/lampoon/mock those who have nots. Why, were you assuming that OFWs are easy targets of humour and sarcasm? Your elitist circle would praise you to high heavens for making their day with such witty anti-filipino quips? Au Contraire, I believe. I think you also know by now. You are so blessed compared to majority of your kababayans. You have your education, use them Ms. Malu.

-from your funky smelling migrant worker kababayan.

  8. caloy ng 33strtjumeirah2 Says:

Father, forgive her cause she doesnt know what shes doing. hindi lang nya nagamit ang kanyang utak ng maigi. she thinks na nakakatuwa ang kanyang article! baka frustrated stand up commedian sya!

  11. Tey-Tey Says:

Malou, I have a lot of friends whose surname is Fernandez none of which insults their fellow filipino the way you did. I am an OFW myself, I work abroad to earn good and clean money but what you’ve written not only insults us, OFWs but it’s a direct slap in our face. I know you are from a rich family with the way you are acting and obviously the way you look, you have a huge kitchen, but hey… that does not give you the privilege to step on someone else’s dignity or way of living. I work as an Engineer, and well I can tell you that I earn far more better than you do in writing columns for magazines and newspapers but I cannot see myself writing this crappy piece of shit not simply because I am and OFW myself but for god sake, I am and we are all human. Yes, it is your freedom to write what you want and speak on what ever language you would like but sure did you don’t have the fucking right to insult those people working on Duty Free Shop or those people on board of that same flight you’ve taken. I use AXE perfume, so what…! It does smells good and it does not makes me different from any other guy you know. Yes it is cheaper, but if you only knew how hard to earn money abroad, the experience everyone of us OFWs experience in working with other nationalities plus the fact that we are thousand miles away from our home and our families, I know you won’t write that column. Remember, if you would like to be respected, learn to respect, if you would like to be treated fairly, be human to treat others fairly. All men are created equal, yes probably you are awake when god spreads material blessings but I am glad you are as sleep when he showers the human raise with humanly attitudes and good looks. Now, I challenge you, when you look at the mirror to fix your piggy face try to think if you are far more blessed than those people working at Duty Free or those OFWs eager to return home or to their work to earn clean money or all of us OFWs working abroad not only for our families but to sustained our beloved country’s economy. I am sure I am far more blessed than you are, not because you’ve written that article, but it is simply my choice.

  12. dennisdpt Says:

What? You mean to tell me she can’t fit her fat ass in coach class? Ms. Malu, you need a reality check…no, wait…you need to go to the gym and hit the treadmill. Maybe if you quit stuffing your face, you would actually realize that domestic helpers and other OFWs are people that the Philippines can be proud of. They do decent and honest work. So please…before we listen to you…you need to trim that fat ass (and that big head of yours) and maybe, just maybe, the plane won’t tip over next time you decide to grace us with your greasy presence.

  13. BAGUIO Says:

tado’ ka! ur animal not human!

  16. muhanadiboyz!!! Says:

Miss Piggy, este Malu pala, sorry I have difficulty remembering Shit names….especially like yours…eniways yeah youre dead right we are buying cheap colonges, but not because we can’t afford yours, but we tend to be wise in spending our hard-earned money with more usefull things…ano nga ba ang natapos mo??? and saan ka nga ba nanggaling??? please NEVER EVER BELITTLE, people like us OFW’s, We might not have the education and the luxuries that you have, BUT we surely have a mature mind not to be rude to say things to people just because WE THINK WE COULD BE FAMOUS, “Youre 1 of a kind, ngayon ko lang napagtanto, iba nga naman talaga ang nagagawa ng pera, isipin mo nakakuha na ng passport, nakasakay pa ng eroplano ang BABOY….HARHARHAR…NAKAKATAWA KA BABUY!!!!please don’t ever brag about your rich clothes and everythin else, lets check morals and conduct, ANO NGA KAYA ANG GRADES MO DUN???MATAPOBRENG BABOY!!!!SIGE SANA SA SUNOD DI KA ATAKIHIN SA PUSO, PARA DI MAISIP NG MGA TAONG STUPIDO DYAN NA ISAGIP KA, KAHIT ISIPING MAG-CPR SA IYO, DI KO SIGURO GAGAWIN KAHIT MAY SINUMPAAN PA AKONG OATH TO CARE FOR THE SICK, SIKARAN PA KITA DYAN MAKITA MO…SIGE NA BABOY, WE OFW’S have more important things to attend to rather than listen to your sick fuckin mind…BITCH….

  17. Lexicon Says:

    New entry on wikipedia:

    Malu Fernandez - Bigot.

Cheers to you for being the gold standard of bigotry.

  18. sara Says:

I have known Malu Fernandez for a very long time as she was my high school batchmate from the Assumption and I can safely say that this woman does not have a single kind bone in her body and I am hard-pressed to name any redeeming qualities. In high school she hung out with the social crowd of pretty and popular party girls but she was most definitely a hanger-on. From the limited interaction I’ve had with her since, it’s apparent she’s living in a time warp and thinks she’s still within the safe confines of the San Lorenzo campus where relished bullying girls of lesser social stature so to speak. To my mind, she’s more an object of pity rather than hatred. A deluded, fat and ugly cow who probably should not have sat in economy simply because hindi talaga siya kasya. She would have needed two seats but then again that would have negated her savings. So to all the OFWs who actually do lead meaningful lives, maawa na lang kayo. You are all contributing significantly to the betterment of this world but this woman, in all likelihood, will live out an incredibly lonely and empty life.

  19. Shaun James Torres Ponte Says:

It is sad. So sad to see a woman who seems to be politically connected, who seem to have everything she wants, who seem to have all the money, who seem to be educated, who seem to be on top of things to lose it with an article that is not well thought of. I wonder, what did the magazine editor have to say about your publishing it? I wonder also, since you work for him or her, if he/she think the same way as you do? I mean there is a saying that goes “tell me who your friends are and I will you who you are”. It is so sad, Malu, that you have to name-drop. Why is it that you do that, do you not have any integrity, at all? I hope that you have learned your lesson, Malu. We may be poor in this country, we may not have the breeding or pedigree that you do, we may not have all the things that you do we may not be cultured enough for culture’s sake, but at least look at where you came from. Aren’t you a Filipino yourself? Do you not see that you are hitting yourself with the same stone you are throwing at us? And don’t you think also that at this time, you may have bitten off more than you could chew? I do not blame all the people sending you all these hate mails or messages, including I, but you deserve it. I hope also that Karma will be kind to you and your kin, family and the Fernandez clan, your clan. You may think that you have freedom of speech or of writing, but at least make sure that you are not hurting anybody. With that article, you have hurt the people that you meantioned including your favorite nephew, your parents who may have known of this already, your friends….and basically, the whole country. If I were you Malu, I would get out of the country before something bad happens.

  20. gabby Says:

I think your major is offending people, not journalism! You have offended the OFWs!!Not just them, the entire nation even President Arroyo! I don’t care if you’re filthy rich! I don’t care if you’ve been abroad!dapat persona non grata ka na eh! you should be banned here!!you are not a worthy Filipino!di lang public apology ang kelangan mong gawin! hayy kung anak kita, na disown na kita!

  21. gabby Says:

oh by the way.. siguro kaya ka ganyan magsalita, kase ngayon mo lang nararanasan lahat yan!hahahh pathetic!! you can be popular but now you are the infamous malu fernandez!!EOW!

  22. egoslave Says:

Pathetic malou, really pathetic. Mga Kababayan, please spread the word, let the whole world read the articles of this bitch, and lets condemn this ‘puta’ together. I for myself will going to set-up a new websites devoted for the downfall of this ‘puta’ - alam natin tuwang-tuwa ang ‘puta’ na yan - that’s what she wants.

  23. Pobreng Guapa Says:

The real rich don’t make such remarks - they have class. Malu obviously lacks breeding. Kawawa din siya - kahit anong designer ek ek ang ipasuot sa kanya, it will not do anything to improve her looks. Pangit sya inside and out. She can drape herself in diamonds and wrap herself in couture, pangit pa rin sya. Literally and figuratively speaking.

  24. Elmo the QA Says:

Im just happy many have responded…And I was even happier she had a downfall. That should serve as a lesson for her…by the way…did she graduate? Was she an educated person? I hope she was. Because educated people dont judge this way, they just observe and give out educated/constructive criticisms. Kahit nagresign na yan…hopefully maranasan nya yung hindi tanggapin sa ibang companies knowing what kind of crap she made…I still believe in KARMA!

  25. Elmo the QA Says:

I didnt know her personally but I think I know how will I describe her (and I mean it)…MORON!

  26. slaphappypappy Says:

The anger and revulsion Malu Fernandez spat out to the OFW community is only indicative of her personal issues of anger and revulsion. Any psychologist worth his salt will tell you that each individual goes through life projecting that which he or she truly feels at his or her core. So there is no need to humiliate her any further with name-calling. She has laid bare for the entire world to see that she is a very unhappy and angry woman full of self-loathing. The Christian approach would be to pray for her personal “enlightenment” - that she moves towards a realization that she is not the “ugliness” she thinks about herself at her core. When she has made peace with who she is and has learned to love herself, her childhood defenses will crumble. She will then cease lashing out because of her personal demons.

I have heard many in the blogosphere lash out in retribution at Ms. Fernandez. Many were on-point, but the vast majority was vulgarly off-point. I suppose that is the human condition - we react when our sensibilities are so shaken that we are left simply in a state of incredulity and disbelief, until a seething anger seeps in, waiting for the most convenient outlet. I understand the anger out there, and I understand everyone’s need and right to be heard. But applying Hammurabi’s principle of “an eye for an eye” just leaves everyone blind. Perhaps what would have been more constructive is to try to understand Ms. Fernandez’ deep-seated anger, and use that as a stepping stone to understanding our own personal demons. Perhaps then, we can be a kinder and gentler blogosphere.

To the millions of OFW-heroes, there was no degradation of your dignity. You continue to sacrifice for the sake of your families and country. Very few will dispute the nobility of your actions. Victimization is a state of mind, so choose not to be one. Do not give the unfortunate Ms. Fernandez that satisfaction.

  27. ohna Says:

I hadn’t had any post about the pig..este Malu F until tonight when i read Slap Happy Puppy’s interesting point. The first time i read the forwarded message about Malu, my first reaction was, anger! I immediately called my friend, who’s moment of peace was disturbed, and briefed her about the pig..este..Malu.I had successfully awakened the sleeping beauty. We both ended up posting nothing, but enjoyed the satirical comments made by many. We thought that was enough. I didn’t have enough, i had been browsing about it until i stumbled upon the news of the pig’s..este Malu’s resignation. I thought that was enough. So, i stopped. But tonigh another email came- MORERXFORMALUFERNANDEZ it said. Unfortunately, iwasn’t able to read its contents. I ended up here. I thought the phrase below explains it all (if i may be allowed to reiterate it so).
“Any psychologist worth his salt will tell you that each individual goes through life projecting that which he or she truly feels at his or her core. So there is no need to humiliate her any further with name-calling. She has laid bare for the entire world to see that she is a very unhappy and angry woman full of self-loathing”.

  28. DUBAI Says:

  29. juan lahat Says:
