Javascript, the scripting language, makes website much more helpful, interactive and interesting. Many websites don’t function well without it. But Javascript can also be dangerous.

How then do you ensure safety in your browsing without altogether disabling Javascript? One key solution is to have some amount of control over the way Javascript is used in the sites you visit. It would be nice to be able to enable or disable Javascript on the sites you visit.

There is a tool, NoScript, that does that sort of thing. According to its creators, NoScript “provides extra protection for Firefox, Flock, Seamonkey and others mozilla-based browsers.” (Sorry IE lovers!) It is a free and open-source add-on. Aside from Javascript, you can block other plugins like Flash.

I have been using NoScript for a month now and so far, I have no complaints. It has given me some assurance that the site I’m visiting does not launch malicious scripts. Because it can block Flash, it also makes browsing sites heavy with multimedia more efficient. (Carlos Conde)
