    Subterfuge

“Noynoy” Aquino sees a “chilling similarity” between the Arroyo regime’s unconcern over the extra-judicial killings and the Marcos government’s indifference to the killing of his father. He is mistaken on at least two points: the Arroyo regime is not so much unconcerned over the extra judicial killings as it is presiding over them. And whatever similarity there is between the two regimes ends where the current one has outstripped the other in the sheer number of extra-judicial killings during its relatively brief, supposedly democratic watch.

    The bane of urban militarization

The fascist mindset of the Arroyo government is reflected in the logic of Marikina City Mayor Marides Fernando, in justifying urban militarization, that “order precedes peace.” That is the logic of the all-out wars in Central Luzon, Southern Tagalog, Bicol, Samar and Leyte, Cagayan Valley, CARAGA region, among others, and recently in Basilan and Sulu. That is also the logic of dictators and militarists, of vigilante groups and death squads.

    Destination Basilan (2003)

From Isabela, the trip to the town of Lamitan took us an hour. In the past, the journey took two hours because of the rugged limestone road. During rainy season, it turned into a sea of mud. Then American soldiers came to the island the previous year for joint military exercises with their Filipino counterparts and, to demonstrate their government’s altruism, they also conducted medical missions, improved roads and other infrastructure, and funded livelihood projects for the people of Basilan.

Philippines’s watchlist and its effect on international solidarity

    By REP. LIZA MAZA

Has the Philippine government issued directives to all our embassies abroad to bar people, especially women, from entering the country and have internship with Gabriela? Are we now a proscribed organization that visitors of Gabriela are being prohibited from connecting with us. Or is the government paving the way for our proscription under the Human Security Act?

Marcos family returning to the limelight in the Philippines

    By CARLOS H. CONDE

The Marcoses, who ruled the Philippines for more than two decades and whose name has been synonymous with corruption, extravagance and brutality, are enjoying a popular revival. The Marcoses’ return to the limelight, analysts say, is due in part to the government’s failure to prosecute them successfully for corruption, despite what investigators call a vast amount of evidence, spanning the two decades from 1965 through their fall from power in 1986, linking various family members to massive theft of government resources.

English getting lost in translation in Philippines

    By CARLOS H. CONDE

Errors in government-approved textbooks used in Filipino public schools are reinforcing fears that crucial language skills are degenerating in a country that has long prided itself on having some of the world’s best English speakers. At a time when English is widely considered an advantage in global competitiveness for any country, many fear this former U.S. colony is slipping.

Abu Sayyaf in Basilan: A deadly redux

    By CARLOS H. CONDE

The Balikatan exercise in Basilan in 2002 has always been sold to the public as a success story — indeed, as a model for how the U.S. military should engage other nations in the fight against terrorism. Five years later, it is clear that the Abu Sayyaf remains a threat on the island, and its continued presence there is proving to be embarrassing both for Manila and Washington, experts say.
