IP Philippines launches exhibition area for Filipino inventions, brands

Makati City – The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines) unveiled the Innovation Area, an exhibition venue for Filipino inventions, designs, and brands with Evolvere as theme. Evolvere, a Latin term for evolve, denotes development into a more advanced state.

“The Innovation Area signifies the crucial role of intellectual property (IP) in stimulating novel ideas and innovation,” Atty. Adrian S. Cristobal, Jr., Director General of IP Philippines, said. “These ideas and innovation when transformed into tangible intellectual assets such as inventions, industrial designs, and brands contribute to the economic well-being of the country. Evolvere also showcases products of Filipino ingenuity,” he added.

Cristobal further explained that Evolvere represents the process of change that the IP system has undergone since the enactment of the IP Code a decade ago. “The Code consolidated all our IP laws and created a unified, autonomous, and self-sustaining IP office to ensure that the IP system promotes creativity and competitiveness,” Cristobal said. “Filipinos should use IP to bolster economic growth, generate jobs and investments, and promote our cultural heritage.”

The IP Code was signed into law on June 6, 1997 by then President Fidel V. Ramos, the guest of honor in the opening of Innovation Area. IP Philippines presented a citation to the former president. A portion of the citation read, “You recognized that our nation’s strength and resources lie in our people’s creativity and talent for innovation. You pioneered the adoption of legislation that would ensure that these ideas and expressions would be protected, nurtured, and channeled to fuel our progress toward becoming a newly industrialized country.”

The Innovation Area’s pilot exhibition features the inventions of Engineer Bonifacio Comandante, Jr. (Sleeping Fish Technology), Neuronemech, Inc. (Soccer Robot System), the University of the Philippines-Diliman (Titanium Nitride Coating Technology, One-Proton Optical Beam-Induced Current Imaging Technology, Two-Color [Two-Photon] Excitation with Focused Excitation Beams and a Raman Shifter, Identification Card Swipe Machine with Fingerprint Verification, and Seaweed-Based Air Freshener Gel). It also features the industrial designs of Movement 8 members Al Caronan, Kenneth Cobonpue, Budji Layug, and Milo Naval.

Renowned Filipino brands featured in Evolvere include Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), La Flor dela Isabela, Manila Electric Company (Meralco), Philippine Airlines (PAL), San Miguel Corporation, and Tanduay Distillers, Inc.

The Innovation Area is located at the ground floor of IP Philippines building, 351 Senator Gil Puyat Avenue, Makati City. The exhibit will run until July 31, 2007.
