MANILA — Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño today called on the Macapagal-Arroyo administration “to immediately issue an indefinite suspension of the implementation of the country’s anti-terror law to give adequate time for the incoming Congress to expansively look into the anti-civil liberties law.”
“The anti-terror law, deceivingly labeled the Human Security Act, is like loaded gun to be given to a homicidal maniac who does not respect the rule of law and of internationally human rights standards. Congress should be given the time to review and repeal the law that violates the country’s various commitments to international human rights treaties,” Casiño said.
Bayan Muna also reiterated that “considering the recent European Union team’s findings that the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police are glaringly inadequate in human rights appreciation and training, giving them draconian powers under the anti-terror law will have dire consequences on civil liberties and even the peace process.”
“It would be better for the government to suspend implementation indefinitely.” #
