I never thought it would happen but it did: chuva, Filipino gayspeak for gossip, has found its way to the news pages of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, in this story written by Bayani San Diego Jr. (who was my fellow proofreader at the Philippine Graphic, back when — pardon the namedropping — Pete Lacaba and Nick Joaquin were running the magazine).
Is this good or bad? In the hands of sloppy writers and editors, probably bad. But in the hands of journalists like Tonton San Diego — who, apart from being a good lifestyle reporter, is an excellent short-story writer whose work has appeared in the Graphic as well as in the now-defunct Midweek — it’s probably not such a bad thing.
